Overview

A Fox is a passive mob: it will never attack a player and simply goes about its own behaviour.

Foxes make their home in the Overworld, turning up in Taiga, Old Growth Taiga, Snowy Taiga, and Grove.

What sets it apart is its behaviour: nocturnal, sleeps during the day.

It carries 10 health points — 5 hearts — and yields 1–3 experience when it dies.

It was first added in 1.14 and has been a fixture of Minecraft ever since.

Also worth noting: Can also be bred with Glow Berries.

Even without combat or loot to speak of, the Fox adds character to the worlds it lives in and often plays a quiet supporting role in the wider ecosystem.

Spawning

Foxes spawn in Taiga, Old Growth Taiga, Snowy Taiga, and Grove.

Because it appears across 4 different biome types, it is one of the easier mobs to track down — heading to any of them should turn one up before long.

Spawns on grass blocks in groups of 2-4. Snow foxes spawn in snowy taiga variants.

They tend to arrive in clusters of 2-4 rather than alone, so expect to meet more than one at a time.

Naturally spawned foxes will despawn over time when no player is nearby; naming one with a name tag or leading it away on a lead keeps it permanent.

With no attack to worry about, the Fox is something you gather or farm rather than fight.

Drops

Do not expect loot from the Fox: it has an empty drop table and yields only XP.

The value of the Fox is in what it does while alive — its behaviour and the role it plays in the world — rather than anything you collect by killing it, so there is little reason to hunt one for materials.

If you are after specific items, the Fox is not your source for them; look to mobs with populated drop tables or to mining and trading instead.

You also collect 1–3 experience for every Fox you defeat.

Since there is nothing to pick up, you do not need to worry about a hopper or collection system for foxes — they leave the ground exactly as they found it.

Because the Fox is harmless and breeds, the efficient long-term approach is a small enclosed pen where a breeding pair keeps replacing what you harvest, rather than hunting wild ones down one by one.

Behavior & Combat

Behaviourally, nocturnal, sleeps during the day. Can pick up items in its mouth. Attacks chickens, rabbits, cod, salmon, and baby turtles. Trusts players who bred them.

Its 10 health is modest, falling to roughly 2 hits from a diamond sword.

Because it never attacks, you are in no danger from it directly; the Fox simply goes about its routine.

Foxes can be bred with Sweet Berries; feed it to two adults and they produce a baby that grows up over about twenty minutes.

All told, the Fox is a low-risk part of the world that rewards patience more than aggression.
