Overview

The Wolf is a neutral mob in Minecraft, which means it ignores players until it is provoked, and only then turns aggressive.

You will normally come across wolfs in the Overworld, where they appear in Forest, Taiga, Old Growth Taiga, Snowy Taiga, and 1 other biome types.

What sets it apart is its behaviour: wild wolves are neutral, attacking only when hit.

It carries 8 health points — 4 hearts — and yields 1–3 experience when it dies.

Players have been encountering the Wolf since the Beta 1.4 update.

One thing worth knowing: Wolf Armor was added in 1.20.5.

For many players the appeal of the Wolf is companionship: once tamed it becomes a loyal helper rather than just scenery.

Spawning

In the wild, the Wolf is generated in Forest, Taiga, Old Growth Taiga, Snowy Taiga, and Grove.

Because it appears across 5 different biome types, it is one of the easier mobs to track down — heading to any of them should turn one up before long.

Spawns on grass blocks in forest and taiga biomes, in packs of 4.

Spawns commonly come in batches of 4, which is worth remembering when you are deciding whether to engage or retreat.

Left alone far from any player, wild wolfs eventually despawn, so use a name tag if you want a specific one to stick around.

Since it only turns hostile when provoked, you can usually walk among wolfs safely as long as you avoid hitting one.

Drops

The Wolf leaves behind nothing collectable on death; you gain experience but no loot.

Because there is nothing to harvest from its corpse, the reason to engage a Wolf is almost always the experience or simply clearing it out of the way, not farming a resource.

If you are after specific items, the Wolf is not your source for them; look to mobs with populated drop tables or to mining and trading instead.

In terms of experience, each kill is worth 1–3 XP orbs.

Since there is nothing to pick up, you do not need to worry about a hopper or collection system for wolfs — they leave the ground exactly as they found it.

Behavior & Combat

Wild wolves are neutral, attacking only when hit. Tamed wolves follow and protect their owner. Attack skeletons on sight.

Its 8 health is modest, falling to roughly 2 hits from a diamond sword.

Its combat profile is 8 health (4 hearts) with attacks dealing 3 on Easy, 4 on Normal and 6 on Hard.

When fighting back, remember it is weak to Fire and Fall damage.

You can tame the Wolf: feed bones to a wild wolf. Each bone has a 1/3 chance to tame. Collar appears when tamed.

Wolfs can be bred with Any Meat; feed it to two adults and they produce a baby that grows up over about twenty minutes.

Bottom line: tame one and the Wolf stops being an obstacle and becomes an asset you will want to protect.
