Taming Tips

- Approach slowly and crouch to avoid scaring shy mobs.
- Have plenty of the taming item ready, as most require multiple attempts.
- Tamed mobs show heart particles when successfully tamed.
- Most tamed mobs will follow and protect their owner.

Horsepassive15 to 30 HP

How to Tame

Repeatedly mount the horse until hearts appear. Each attempt has a 5% base chance, increasing by 5% each try.

Found in: Plains, Sunflower Plains, Savanna

Breeding item: Golden Apple

Can also be bred with Golden Carrots. 7 base colors and 5 marking patterns create 35 variants. Health ranges from 15 to 30 HP.

Donkeypassive15 to 30 HP

How to Tame

Repeatedly mount the donkey until hearts appear, same as horses.

Found in: Plains, Sunflower Plains, Meadow

Breeding item: Golden Apple

Breeding a horse with a donkey produces a mule. Can also be bred with Golden Carrots. Health ranges from 15 to 30 HP.

Mules cannot breed, like in real life. Must be created by breeding a horse with a donkey.

Parrotpassive6 HP

How to Tame

Feed seeds (wheat, melon, pumpkin, or beetroot seeds). 1/3 chance per seed to tame.

Found in: Jungle, Bamboo Jungle, Sparse Jungle

5 color variants: red, blue, green, cyan, gray. Feeding a cookie kills the parrot instantly.

Wolfneutral8 HP

How to Tame

Feed bones to a wild wolf. Each bone has a 1/3 chance to tame. Collar appears when tamed.

Found in: Forest, Taiga, Old Growth Taiga, Snowy Taiga

Breeding item: Any Meat

Tamed wolves have 20 HP (10 hearts). When tamed, HP increases and damage is boosted. Can be dyed with any color to change collar color. Wolf Armor was added in 1.20.5.

Llamaneutral15 to 30 HP

How to Tame

Repeatedly mount the llama until hearts appear, similar to horses.

Found in: Savanna, Windswept Hills, Windswept Forest

Breeding item: Hay Bale

Form caravans: leash one llama and up to 9 more will follow in a chain. Spit deals only 1 damage.

Trader Llamaneutral15 to 30 HP

How to Tame

Repeatedly mount the llama until hearts appear, after the Wandering Trader has despawned or been killed.

Found in: Special conditions

Breeding item: Hay Bale

Always spawns with a decorative carpet. Can be bred with regular llamas.

Catpassive10 HP

How to Tame

Slowly approach a stray cat while holding Raw Cod or Raw Salmon. Stay still and let the cat come to you. Each feeding has a 1/3 chance to tame.

Found in: Village, Swamp Hut

Breeding item: Raw Cod

11 skin variants. Tamed cats bring morning gifts (string, feathers, phantom membrane, etc.) when the player sleeps. Creepers and Phantoms flee from cats.

Nautiluspassive15 HP

How to Tame

Feed it a pufferfish or a bucket of pufferfish

Found in: Ocean, Deep Ocean, Cold Ocean, Deep Cold Ocean

Breeding item: Cod

The nautilus shell it drops is the same shell a conduit needs, so an ocean with nautiluses in it is a conduit you do not have to fish for.

Skeleton Horsepassive15 HP

How to Tame

Ride it until it stops throwing you, then saddle it

It walks through water without slowing down and does not drown, which is the one thing it does better than a living horse.

Zombie Horsepassive25 HP

How to Tame

Ride it until it stops throwing you, then saddle it

Found in: Plains, Sunflower Plains, Savanna, Savanna Plateau

It is the one horse that rolls in with the monsters, so a plains at night can hand you a mount instead of a fight.
