Llama
neutralTameableBreedableOurs, not the game's own: how a llama behaves. Same on Bedrock v1.26.40.05 for weight, group. Checked 2026-08-22, and here is how we check.
Overview
A Llama is a neutral mob: it ignores players until it is provoked, and only then turns aggressive.
Look for the Llama across the Overworld; it is tied to Savanna, Windswept Hills, and Windswept Forest.
Its defining trait is simple: spits at mobs that attack them or their herd.
It carries 15 to 30 health points, 7.5 to 15 hearts, rolled fresh when it spawns, and yields 1 to 3 experience when it dies.
Players have been encountering the Llama since the 1.11 update.
A useful detail many players miss: Spit deals only 1 damage.
For many players the appeal of the Llama is companionship: once tamed it becomes a loyal helper rather than just scenery.

Spawning
Natural spawns for the Llama occur in Savanna, Windswept Hills, and Windswept Forest.
Because it appears across 4 different biomes, it is one of the easier mobs to track down, and heading to any of them should turn one up before long.
Spawns on grass blocks in herds of 4-6.
They tend to arrive in clusters of 4-6 rather than alone, so expect to meet more than one at a time.
Naturally spawned llamas will despawn over time when no player is nearby; naming one with a name tag or leading it away on a lead keeps it permanent.
As a neutral creature it leaves you alone until disturbed, so careful movement lets you share its space without a fight.
Where the Llama spawns
Savanna Plateau is where it stands strongest: weight 8 on the creature list and 11.8% of it, arriving 4 to 6 at a time. There it shares the list with Sheep at 12, Armadillo at 10, Chicken at 10, Pig at 10 and Cow at 8 and 3 more, 68 weight together, of which 8 is llama. It also turns up in Windswept Forest at 11.1%, Windswept Gravelly Hills at 11.1% and Windswept Hills at 11.1%.
| Biome | Weight | Share | Group |
|---|---|---|---|
Savanna Plateau | 8 | 11.8% | 4 |
Windswept Forest | 5 | 11.1% | 4 to 6 |
Windswept Gravelly Hills | 5 | 11.1% | 4 to 6 |
Windswept Hills | 5 | 11.1% | 4 to 6 |
Drops
Killing a Llama produces the following loot:
Nothing here is guaranteed: a kill can give you 0 to 2 Leather.
You also collect 1 to 3 experience for every Llama you defeat.
Farming llamas is the standard way to stockpile leather in quantity.
With nothing guaranteed, output is swingy: over many kills the averages hold, but any single Llama may give you little, so farm in volume rather than expecting a jackpot each time.
| Item | Count | Chance | Conditions |
|---|---|---|---|
| Leather | 0 to 2 | not every kill | Looting III up to 5 |

Its health is not fixed: each one starts at 15 and adds two rolls when it spawns, one of 0 to 7 and one of 0 to 8.
The Llama does not stand alone on these numbers: the donkey on the same 0.175 movement speed.
Llama: 0.68% of its category, rank 39 of 52
On 4 of the 66 biome lists (4 spawn entries in total), and 0.68% of every spawn the game puts in its creature group is a llama.
A llama averages 1 Leather a kill on the rolls Minecraft Java 26.2 makes for it, before Looting, which puts a full stack of 64 Leather at 64 kills.

Turned around, 20 unblocked llama hits empty a player's 20 health, 5% of the bar at a time, which is what the llama's 1 damage on Normal buys it. Those same figures also describe the trader llama. Where a llama parts company is how often the biome files name them: 4 spawn entries here, 0 spawn entries for the trader llama, counted over the spawn lists.
Behavior & Combat
Spits at mobs that attack them or their herd. Can be equipped with chests (3-15 slots based on Strength stat) and carpets as decoration.
It notices a target from 32 blocks, 10th of 88 for follow range, with the zombified piglin its nearest at 35.
On the offensive it deals 1 damage on every difficulty, and you will need to chew through 15 to 30 health (7.5 to 15 hearts) to bring one down.
When fighting back, remember it is weak to Fire and Fall damage.
Since it can attack from range, closing the distance quickly or breaking line of sight with cover is often safer than trading hits at a distance.
This is one of the tameable mobs. Repeatedly mount the llama until hearts appear, similar to horses.
To breed them, hand Hay Bale to a pair of adults; they enter love mode and a baby Llama appears, maturing in roughly twenty minutes.
Bottom line: tame one and the Llama stops being an obstacle and becomes an asset you will want to protect.
Llama commands
| Command | What it does |
|---|---|
| /summon minecraft:llama | Puts a llama on the block you are standing on. |
| /give @p minecraft:llama_spawn_egg | Hands you the llama spawn egg, so you can place llamas where you want them. |
| /kill @e[type=minecraft:llama] | Removes every llama that is loaded around you. |
Entity id minecraft:llama, spawn egg minecraft:llama_spawn_egg.
Llama farm
Build a llama farm around the one rule the game applies to every llama. Spawns on grass blocks in herds of 4-6.
The llama is heaviest in Savanna Plateau at 11.8%, out of the 4 biome spawn lists it stands on, so a llama farm belongs there rather than in the first cave you find.
4 to 6 llamas arrive per roll, so give the llama platform width instead of stacking it.
Breeding beats waiting on spawns here: hay bale given to two adults produces a baby, and the pen keeps working in a lit, walled space where nothing new would ever spawn.
Each kill is worth 1 to 3 experience and up to 2 leather, or 5 with Looting III, so the size of the llama farm follows the number you need of that one item.
Savanna Plateau at 11.8%Llama version history
The llama was added in Minecraft 1.11, which came out on 14 November 2016, so the llama has been in the game for 9 years.
3 other mobs here came with it: the vex, the evoker and the vindicator. Of the 88 mobs we list, 42 were in the game before the llama and 42 arrived after it.
The llama numbers here come from Java 26.2, the version running now, and not from the one that introduced it.
