Overview

A Blaze is a hostile mob: it will attack players on sight whenever it is able to reach them.

What sets it apart is its behaviour: flies and shoots triple fireballs.

Stat-wise it sits at 20 health (10 hearts), dropping 10 experience on death.

Players have been encountering the Blaze since the 1.0.0 update.

Knowing how the Blaze behaves is mostly about survival: recognising it early and reacting correctly is what keeps a night-time excursion from ending in a respawn.

Spawning

Blazes spawn in Nether Fortress.

Spawns from Blaze spawners in Nether Fortresses.

Being a Nether mob, it ignores the Overworld's darkness rules and can spawn regardless of light level within its home biomes, which makes the Nether dangerous even in well-lit areas.

None of them appear in the open: each one comes out of a spawner inside a Nether Fortress, which puts a portal into the Nether and a structure hunt in front of your first Blaze.

Farming blazes is not a matter of a dark platform: it is the spawn rule above that a farm has to reproduce.

Where the Blaze spawns

  • Inside a fortress the biome list is replaced: weight 10 there, 35.7% of the monster list, in groups of 2 to 3.

On that same fortress list stand the zombified piglin at weight 5, the skeleton at weight 2, the magma cube at weight 3 and the wither skeleton at weight 8.

Drops

Killing a Blaze produces the following loot:

Nothing here is guaranteed: a kill can give you 1 Blaze Rod.

In terms of experience, each kill is worth 10 XP orbs.

These are well worth keeping. Blaze Rods are essential for crafting Brewing Stands and Blaze Powder (fuel for brewing and crafting Eyes of Ender).

The Looting enchantment on your sword raises the quantity and, for many of these items, the drop chance of the rarer rolls, so it is well worth using when you grind this mob.

With nothing guaranteed, output is swingy: over many kills the averages hold, but any single Blaze may give you little, so farm in volume rather than expecting a jackpot each time.

Blaze: 4 values straight out of Minecraft Java 26.2

Nothing in the biome spawn lists and nothing in the rolls on death names the blaze, so the numbers on this page come from one place only: the game's own entry for it in Minecraft Java 26.2sets 20 health, 6 attack damage, 0.23 movement speed and 48 blocks follow range.

128 blaze kills fill a stack of 64 Blaze Rod, because the ranges Minecraft Java 26.2 rolls for it come out at 0.5 per kill before Looting. 1 of those 1 rows (Blaze Rod) only roll when a player lands the killing blow, so a blaze killed by a fall or another mob averages 0 items instead of 0.5.

Coming the other way, a blaze hit is 25% of a player's 20 health, 4 of them a full bar, all out of the blaze's 5 damage on Normal. On Easy the same blaze hit is 15%, on Hard 35%, so 7 hits against 3.

Behavior & Combat

Flies and shoots triple fireballs. Sets target on fire. Immune to fire and lava. Damaged by snowballs (3 damage each).

It notices a target from 48 blocks, 3rd of 88 for follow range, with the wither its nearest at 40.

On the offensive it deals 3 on Easy, 5 on Normal and 7 on Hard, and you will need to chew through 20 health (10 hearts) to bring one down.

To deal with one efficiently, exploit its weaknesses: it is vulnerable to Snowballs (3 damage), Water, and Splash Water Bottles.

Since it can attack from range, closing the distance quickly or breaking line of sight with cover is often safer than trading hits at a distance.

Native to the Nether, it is completely immune to fire and lava, so burning strategies that work elsewhere are useless here.

The practical takeaway is to respect its strengths, exploit the weaknesses listed above, and you will rarely lose a fight you choose to take.

Blaze commands

Cheats have to be on in that world before the blaze appears. It needs 0.6 by 1.8 blocks of space to stand in.
CommandWhat it does
/summon minecraft:blazePuts a blaze on the block you are standing on.
/give @p minecraft:blaze_spawn_eggHands you the blaze spawn egg, so you can place blazes where you want them.
/kill @e[type=minecraft:blaze]Removes every blaze that is loaded around you.

Entity id minecraft:blaze, spawn egg minecraft:blaze_spawn_egg.

Blaze farm

The blaze has no biome of its own to spawn in: it comes with the fortress, at 35.7% of the monster rolls there, 2 to 3 at a time.

That turns a blaze farm into fortress work: light everything that is not meant to make blazes, and the rolls land where you want them.

Each kill is worth 10 experience and up to 1 blaze rod, or 4 with Looting III, and that row only drops when you land the killing blow yourself, so a fall or a lava blade collects nothing, which is the number to scale the blaze farm against.

10 experience per killBlaze Rod up to 1, 4 with Looting III

Blaze version history

17 November 2011 is the day the blaze arrived, in Minecraft 1.0.0, and the blaze has been part of the game for 14 years since.

4 other mobs here came with it: the mooshroom, the magma cube, the ender dragon and the snow golem. Of the 88 mobs we list, 17 were in the game before the blaze and 66 arrived after it.

All of the blaze data above is taken from Java 26.2, so it describes the blaze as it is today.

What Blaze sounds like

Turn subtitles on and every blaze sound names itself in the corner of the screen. These are the 5 lines a blaze can put there, and you can play any of them yourself with /playsound minecraft:entity.blaze.ambient master @p.
