Overview

The Horse is a passive mob in Minecraft, which means it will never attack a player and simply goes about its own behaviour.

Horses make their home in the Overworld, turning up in Plains, Sunflower Plains, and Savanna.

What sets it apart is its behaviour: wanders in herds.

Stat-wise it sits at 15 to 30 health (7.5 to 15 hearts), dropping 1 to 3 experience on death.

It was first added in 1.6.1 and has been a fixture of Minecraft ever since.

One thing worth knowing: Health ranges from 15 to 30 HP.

For many players the appeal of the Horse is companionship: once tamed it becomes a loyal helper rather than just scenery.

Spawning

Natural spawns for the Horse occur in Plains, Sunflower Plains, and Savanna.

Because it appears across 5 different biomes, it is one of the easier mobs to track down, and heading to any of them should turn one up before long.

Spawns on grass blocks in herds of 2-6.

They tend to arrive in clusters of 2-6 rather than alone, so expect to meet more than one at a time.

Naturally spawned horses will despawn over time when no player is nearby; naming one with a name tag or leading it away on a lead keeps it permanent.

With no attack to worry about, the Horse is something you gather or farm rather than fight.

Its name turns up in the spawn rule of the donkey, which spawns on grass blocks, rarer than horses, in herds of 1-3 and the mule, bred from a horse and a donkey.

Where the Horse spawns

Plains and Sunflower Plains are where it stands strongest: weight 5 on the creature list and 10.9% of it, arriving 2 to 6 at a time. There it shares the list with Sheep at 12, Chicken at 10, Pig at 10, Cow at 8 and Donkey at 1, 46 weight together, of which 5 is horse. It also turns up in Savanna at 1.9%, Windswept Savanna at 1.9% and Savanna Plateau at 1.5%.

Drops

Here is what you can expect to collect from a Horse:

Nothing here is guaranteed: a kill can give you 0 to 2 Leather.

You also collect 1 to 3 experience for every Horse you defeat.

Leather from horses is renewable, so a small breeding setup keeps you supplied indefinitely.

With nothing guaranteed, output is swingy: over many kills the averages hold, but any single Horse may give you little, so farm in volume rather than expecting a jackpot each time.

Because the Horse is harmless and breeds, the efficient long-term approach is a small enclosed pen where a breeding pair keeps replacing what you harvest, rather than hunting wild ones down one by one.

Its health is not fixed: each one starts at 15 and adds two rolls when it spawns, one of 0 to 7 and one of 0 to 8.

The Horse does not stand alone on these numbers: the sheep at 0.23 movement speed, the nearest we list to its 0.225.

Horse: 0.41% of its category, rank 45 of 52

On 5 of the 66 biome lists (5 spawn entries in total), and 0.41% of every spawn the game puts in its creature group is a horse.

The ranges Minecraft Java 26.2 rolls for a horse give 1 Leather per kill, so 64 Leather costs 64 kills before Looting.

The donkey and mule match every number above, health, attack and yield alike, so how often the biome files name them is the honest way to tell a horse apart: 5 spawn entries here against 6 spawn entries for the donkey and 0 spawn entries for the mule, counted over the spawn lists.

Behavior & Combat

In the field, wanders in herds. Can be tamed, saddled, and fitted with horse armor. Variable stats for speed, jump height, and health (15 to 30 HP).

At 0.225 it is 52nd of 72 for speed, just below the sheep at 0.23.

It is completely harmless and deals no damage, so the only risk it poses is wandering into lava, cacti or a long fall.

This is one of the tameable mobs. Repeatedly mount the horse until hearts appear. Each attempt has a 5% base chance, increasing by 5% each try.

Breeding is straightforward: Golden Apple given to two horses starts love mode and yields offspring.

Once prepared it can be ridden, which makes it as much a means of transport as a creature to study.

Bottom line: tame one and the Horse stops being an obstacle and becomes an asset you will want to protect.

Horse commands

Cheats have to be on in that world before the horse appears. It needs 1.396 by 1.6 blocks of space to stand in.
CommandWhat it does
/summon minecraft:horsePuts a horse on the block you are standing on.
/give @p minecraft:horse_spawn_eggHands you the horse spawn egg, so you can place horses where you want them.
/kill @e[type=minecraft:horse]Removes every horse that is loaded around you.

Entity id minecraft:horse, spawn egg minecraft:horse_spawn_egg.

Horse farm

Build a horse farm around the one rule the game applies to every horse. Spawns on grass blocks in herds of 2-6.

Plains is where the horse has the biggest slice of the roll, 10.9% across the 5 lists the horse appears on, and that is the biome to build a horse farm in.

The game puts 2 to 6 horses down per roll, so a wide horse floor beats a tall one.

Breeding beats waiting on spawns here: golden apple given to two adults produces a baby, and the pen keeps working in a lit, walled space where nothing new would ever spawn.

Each kill is worth 1 to 3 experience and up to 2 leather, or 5 with Looting III, which is the number to scale the horse farm against.

Horse version history

Minecraft 1.6.1 brought the horse in on 28 June 2013, 13 years of horse by now.

4 other mobs here came with it: the donkey, the mule, the skeleton horse and the zombie horse. That puts the horse behind 29 of the 88 mobs here and ahead of 54.

Every horse figure on this page is read from Minecraft Java 26.2 as it stands today, not from the version above.
