Overview

In Minecraft, the Pig is classified as a passive mob: it will never attack a player and simply goes about its own behaviour.

Look for the Pig across the Overworld; it is tied to Plains, Forest, Sunflower Plains, Flower Forest, and 2 other biome types.

Its defining trait is simple: wanders aimlessly.

Stat-wise it sits at 10 health (5 hearts), dropping 1 to 3 experience on death.

Players have been encountering the Pig since the Classic 0.24_SURVIVAL_TEST update.

Because it breeds and drops useful materials, the Pig is a staple of self-sufficient survival bases, supplying raw porkchop on demand.

Spawning

Natural spawns for the Pig occur in Plains, Forest, Sunflower Plains, Flower Forest, Birch Forest, and Taiga.

Because it appears across 25 different biomes, it is one of the easier mobs to track down, and heading to any of them should turn one up before long.

Spawns on grass blocks with light level 9+, in groups of 4.

The light-level requirement is the key detail: it needs light level 9+ to appear, so adjusting block light is the simplest way to control where it shows up.

Spawns commonly come in batches of 4, which is worth remembering when you are deciding whether to engage or retreat.

Left alone far from any player, wild pigs eventually despawn, so use a name tag if you want a specific one to stick around.

Because it is harmless, the Pig is mostly useful as a renewable source of its drops, and you can let a small population breed up over time.

Another mob's spawn rule points back at it: the zombified piglin, which can also spawn from Nether Portals in the Overworld or when a pig is struck by lightning.

Where the Pig spawns

Birch Forest, Dark Forest and Old Growth Birch Forest are where it stands strongest: weight 10 on the creature list and 25% of it, arriving 1 to 4 at a time. There it shares the list with Sheep at 12, Chicken at 10 and Cow at 8, 40 weight together, of which 10 is pig. The other 22 biomes on its list run from 22.7% down to 5.9%.

Drops

Killing a Pig produces the following loot:

Every kill yields 1 to 3 Raw Porkchop.

In terms of experience, each kill is worth 1 to 3 XP orbs.

Raw Porkchop from pigs is renewable, so a small breeding setup keeps you supplied indefinitely.

Since every item here is guaranteed, the only variable is quantity, which makes this mob a dependable, low-variance source of what it carries.

Because the Pig is harmless and breeds, the efficient long-term approach is a small enclosed pen where a breeding pair keeps replacing what you harvest, rather than hunting wild ones down one by one.

Pig: 7.4% of its category, rank 15 of 52

On 25 of the 66 biome lists (25 spawn entries in total), and 7.4% of every spawn the game puts in its creature group is a pig.

32 pig kills fill a stack of 64 Raw Porkchop, because the ranges Minecraft Java 26.2 rolls for it come out at 2 per kill before Looting.

Behavior & Combat

In the field, wanders aimlessly. Can be saddled and ridden, steered with a Carrot on a Stick. Struck by lightning, transforms into a Zombified Piglin.

Its 10 health is 53rd of 80, just over the 8 of the sheep.

Dealing zero damage, the Pig is one of the safest creatures to be around.

To breed them, hand Carrot to a pair of adults; they enter love mode and a baby Pig appears, maturing in roughly twenty minutes.

Once prepared it can be ridden, which makes it as much a means of transport as a creature to study.

All told, the Pig is a low-risk part of the world that rewards patience more than aggression.

Pig commands

Cheats have to be on in that world before the pig appears. It needs 0.9 by 0.9 blocks of space to stand in.
CommandWhat it does
/summon minecraft:pigPuts a pig on the block you are standing on.
/give @p minecraft:pig_spawn_eggHands you the pig spawn egg, so you can place pigs where you want them.
/kill @e[type=minecraft:pig]Removes every pig that is loaded around you.

Entity id minecraft:pig, spawn egg minecraft:pig_spawn_egg.

Pig farm

Build a pig farm around the one rule the game applies to every pig. Spawns on grass blocks with light level 9+, in groups of 4.

Birch Forest is where the pig has the biggest slice of the roll, 25% across the 25 lists the pig appears on, and that is the biome to build a pig farm in.

The game puts 1 to 4 pigs down per roll, so a wide pig floor beats a tall one.

Breeding beats waiting on spawns here: carrot given to two adults produces a baby, and the pen keeps working in a lit, walled space where nothing new would ever spawn.

Each kill is worth 1 to 3 experience and up to 3 raw porkchop, or 6 with Looting III, so the size of the pig farm follows the number you need of that one item.

Pig version history

The pig goes back to Classic 0.24_SURVIVAL_TEST, from before the game had numbered releases, which makes the pig one of the 8 oldest mobs on this site.

4 other mobs here came with it: the cow, the zombie, the skeleton and the creeper. Of the 88 mobs we list, 0 were in the game before the pig and 80 arrived after it.

Every pig figure on this page is read from Minecraft Java 26.2 as it stands today, not from the version above.
