Overview

A Goat is a neutral mob: it is not hostile on sight, and its own behaviour decides when that changes: rams players, mobs, and armor stands every 30-300 seconds.

Look for the Goat across the Overworld; it is tied to Jagged Peaks, Frozen Peaks, and Snowy Slopes.

In practice you will recognise it quickly, because jumps very high (10 blocks).

Stat-wise it sits at 10 health (5 hearts), dropping 1 to 3 experience on death.

Players have been encountering the Goat since the 1.17 update.

A useful detail many players miss: 8 horn variants exist.

The Goat sits in a useful middle ground, harmless if you respect it, but a real threat if you provoke it, which makes reading the situation important.

Spawning

In the wild, the Goat is generated in Jagged Peaks, Frozen Peaks, and Snowy Slopes.

The spawn table has no favourite: the Goat takes up the same 100% of the list in Frozen Peaks and Jagged Peaks, so head for whichever you can reach first.

Spawns on stone, snow, or packed ice in mountain biomes, in groups of 2-3.

They tend to arrive in clusters of 2-3 rather than alone, so expect to meet more than one at a time.

Naturally spawned goats will despawn over time when no player is nearby; naming one with a name tag or leading it away on a lead keeps it permanent.

Whether one leaves you alone is not up to you alone: rams players, mobs, and armor stands every 30-300 seconds.

Where the Goat spawns

Frozen Peaks and Jagged Peaks are where it stands strongest: weight 5 on the creature list and 100% of it, arriving 1 to 3 at a time. It also turns up in Snowy Slopes at 55.6%.

Frozen Peaks5100%1 to 3
Jagged Peaks5100%1 to 3

Drops

The Goat leaves behind nothing collectable on death; you gain experience but no loot.

Because there is nothing to harvest from its corpse, the reason to engage a Goat is almost always the experience or simply clearing it out of the way, not farming a resource.

If you are after specific items, the Goat is not your source for them; look to mobs with populated drop tables or to mining and trading instead.

You also collect 1 to 3 experience for every Goat you defeat.

Since there is nothing to pick up, you do not need to worry about a hopper or collection system for goats; they leave the ground exactly as they found it.

The game rolls nothing for it when it dies, so it leaves nothing behind at all.

Goat attributes

Size0.9 x 1.3 blocks
Tracking range10 chunks
Attack damage attribute2
Movement speed0.2
Follow range16 blocks
Health10 points
Experience1 to 3

The Goat does not stand alone on these numbers: the mooshroom, level with it on health, speed and follow range alike, the fox on the same 2 attack damage and the axolotl at that same figure.

Goat: 3.87% of its category, rank 20 of 52

On 3 of the 66 biome lists (3 spawn entries in total), and 3.87% of every spawn the game puts in its creature group is a goat.

Coming the other way, a goat hit is 10% of a player's 20 health, 10 of them a full bar, all out of the goat's 2 damage on Normal. On Easy the same goat hit is 5%, on Hard 15%, so 20 hits against 7.

Behavior & Combat

Jumps very high (10 blocks). Rams players, mobs, and armor stands every 30-300 seconds. Screaming goats are rare and ram more frequently.

At 0.2 it is 53rd of 72 for speed, just below the horse at 0.225.

It can hit you for 1 on Easy, 2 on Normal and 3 on Hard, while its own 10 health (5 hearts) determines how many blows it takes to kill.

The fastest way to win is to lean on what it fears: Fire and Fall damage (but reduced).

Goats can be bred with Wheat; feed it to two adults and they produce a baby that grows up over about twenty minutes.

As long as you avoid landing the first blow, you can usually go about your business near a Goat without trouble.

Goat commands

Cheats have to be on in that world before the goat appears. It needs 0.9 by 1.3 blocks of space to stand in.
CommandWhat it does
/summon minecraft:goatPuts a goat on the block you are standing on.
/give @p minecraft:goat_spawn_eggHands you the goat spawn egg, so you can place goats where you want them.
/kill @e[type=minecraft:goat]Removes every goat that is loaded around you.

Entity id minecraft:goat, spawn egg minecraft:goat_spawn_egg.

Goat farm

Everything about a goat farm follows the goat spawn rule. Spawns on stone, snow, or packed ice in mountain biomes, in groups of 2-3.

The goat is heaviest in Frozen Peaks at 100%, out of the 3 biome spawn lists it stands on, so a goat farm belongs there rather than in the first cave you find.

1 to 3 goats arrive per roll, so give the goat platform width instead of stacking it.

Breeding beats waiting on spawns here: wheat given to two adults produces a baby, and the pen keeps working in a lit, walled space where nothing new would ever spawn.

1 to 3 experience per killFrozen Peaks at 100%

Goat version history

Minecraft 1.17 brought the goat in on 8 June 2021, 5 years of goat by now.

2 other mobs here came with it: the glow squid and the axolotl. 68 of our 88 mobs are older than the goat, 17 are younger.

Every goat figure on this page is read from Minecraft Java 26.2 as it stands today, not from the version above.
