Overview

A Turtle is a passive mob: it will never attack a player and simply goes about its own behaviour.

Turtles make their home in the Overworld, turning up in Beach.

What sets it apart is its behaviour: moves slowly on land, faster in water.

With 30 HP (15 hearts) on its bar, killing one rewards 1 to 3 experience.

The Turtle has been part of the game since version 1.13.

One thing worth knowing: 5 Scutes craft a Turtle Shell helmet providing Water Breathing.

Because it breeds and drops useful materials, the Turtle is a staple of self-sufficient survival bases, supplying seagrass on demand.

Spawning

In the wild, the Turtle is generated in Beach.

That single-biome restriction means Beach is the only place to look; if you are not there, you will not find one, so locating the biome is the real task.

Spawns on sand blocks in Beach biomes with light level 8+ above Y=60.

The light-level requirement is the key detail: it needs light level 8+ to appear, so adjusting block light is the simplest way to control where it shows up.

Height matters too: these spawns are tied to around Y=60, so the vertical slice you build or explore at directly affects how many you encounter.

Because it is harmless, the Turtle is mostly useful as a renewable source of its drops, and you can let a small population breed up over time.

Spawn Biomes

Where the Turtle spawns

Beach is where it stands strongest: weight 5 on the creature list and 100% of it, arriving 2 to 5 at a time. That is the whole list.

Drops

Killing a Turtle produces the following loot:

Nothing here is guaranteed: a kill can give you 0 to 2 Seagrass and 1 Bowl only in specific situations.

In terms of experience, each kill is worth 1 to 3 XP orbs.

Seagrass from turtles is renewable, so a small breeding setup keeps you supplied indefinitely.

With nothing guaranteed, output is swingy: over many kills the averages hold, but any single Turtle may give you little, so farm in volume rather than expecting a jackpot each time.

Because the Turtle is harmless and breeds, the efficient long-term approach is a small enclosed pen where a breeding pair keeps replacing what you harvest, rather than hunting wild ones down one by one.

The Turtle does not stand alone on these numbers: the guardian on the same 30 health, the polar bear at that same figure and the shulker at that same figure.

Turtle: 1.52% of its category, rank 26 of 52

On 1 of the 66 biome lists (1 spawn entry in total), and 1.52% of every spawn the game puts in its creature group is a turtle.

64 turtle kills fill a stack of 64 Seagrass, because the ranges Minecraft Java 26.2 rolls for it come out at 1 per kill before Looting.

Behavior & Combat

Moves slowly on land, faster in water. Lays eggs on home beach. Baby turtles drop Scute when growing up.

Its 30 health is 13th of 80, just under the 32 of the camel.

Because it never attacks, you are in no danger from it directly; the Turtle simply goes about its routine.

Breeding is straightforward: Seagrass given to two turtles starts love mode and yields offspring.

All told, the Turtle is a low-risk part of the world that rewards patience more than aggression.

Turtle commands

Cheats have to be on in that world before the turtle appears. It needs 1.2 by 0.4 blocks of space to stand in.
CommandWhat it does
/summon minecraft:turtlePuts a turtle on the block you are standing on.
/give @p minecraft:turtle_spawn_eggHands you the turtle spawn egg, so you can place turtles where you want them.
/kill @e[type=minecraft:turtle]Removes every turtle that is loaded around you.

Entity id minecraft:turtle, spawn egg minecraft:turtle_spawn_egg.

Turtle farm

Everything about a turtle farm follows the turtle spawn rule. Spawns on sand blocks in Beach biomes with light level 8+ above Y=60.

Of the 1 biome spawn list the turtle stands on, Beach gives the turtle its largest share at 100%, so a turtle platform there fills faster than the same build anywhere else.

Each roll brings 2 to 5 turtles at once, which is why a turtle farm wants floor area rather than height.

Breeding beats waiting on spawns here: seagrass given to two adults produces a baby, and the pen keeps working in a lit, walled space where nothing new would ever spawn.

Each kill is worth 1 to 3 experience and up to 2 seagrass, or 5 with Looting III, so the size of the turtle farm follows the number you need of that one item.

Turtle version history

18 July 2018 is the day the turtle arrived, in Minecraft 1.13, and the turtle has been part of the game for 8 years since.

7 other mobs here came with it: the cod, the salmon, the tropical fish, the pufferfish, the dolphin, the phantom and the drowned. Of the 88 mobs we list, 47 were in the game before the turtle and 33 arrived after it.

The turtle numbers here come from Java 26.2, the version running now, and not from the one that introduced it.
