Overview

A Panda is a passive mob: it will not hunt a player down, though its attack damage is not zero, because it uses that on other mobs or in self-defence.

Pandas make their home in the Overworld, turning up in Jungle and Bamboo Jungle.

Its defining trait is simple: eats bamboo and cake.

Stat-wise it sits at 20 health (10 hearts), dropping 1 to 3 experience on death.

It was first added in 1.14 and has been a fixture of Minecraft ever since.

Also worth noting: Brown pandas are extremely rare (1/64 chance).

Because it breeds and drops useful materials, the Panda is a staple of self-sufficient survival bases, supplying bamboo on demand.

Spawning

Natural spawns for the Panda occur in Jungle and Bamboo Jungle.

Your best bet is to head straight for Bamboo Jungle, since that is where it turns up most reliably out of the handful of biomes it favours.

Spawns on grass blocks in Jungle biomes, requires bamboo within 5 blocks.

Left alone far from any player, wild pandas eventually despawn, so use a name tag if you want a specific one to stick around.

Because it is harmless, the Panda is mostly useful as a renewable source of its drops, and you can let a small population breed up over time.

Where the Panda spawns

Bamboo Jungle is where it stands strongest: weight 80 on the creature list and 47.1% of it, arriving 1 to 2 at a time. There it shares the list with Parrot at 40, Chicken at 20, Sheep at 12, Pig at 10 and Cow at 8, 170 weight together, of which 80 is panda. It also turns up in Jungle at 1.1%.

Drops

Killing a Panda produces the following loot:

Every kill yields 1 Bamboo.

In terms of experience, each kill is worth 1 to 3 XP orbs.

These are well worth keeping. Requires at least 8 bamboo blocks within 5 blocks to breed.

Since every item here is guaranteed, the only variable is quantity, which makes this mob a dependable, low-variance source of what it carries.

Because the Panda is harmless and breeds, the efficient long-term approach is a small enclosed pen where a breeding pair keeps replacing what you harvest, rather than hunting wild ones down one by one.

Panda: 0.73% of its category, rank 38 of 52

On 2 of the 66 biome lists (2 spawn entries in total), and 0.73% of every spawn the game puts in its creature group is a panda.

A panda averages 1 Bamboo a kill on the rolls Minecraft Java 26.2 makes for it, before Looting, which puts a full stack of 64 Bamboo at 64 kills.

On the receiving end a panda takes 30% off a player's 20 health per hit, so 4 of them land the kill; that share is the panda's attack damage attribute of 6.

Behavior & Combat

Eats bamboo and cake. Has 7 personality types: normal, lazy, worried, playful, aggressive, weak, and brown. Aggressive pandas attack when hit.

At 0.15 it is 66th of 72 for speed, just above the armadillo at 0.14.

On the stat sheet it carries an attack damage attribute of 6 alongside 20 health (10 hearts), though it is not a mob that comes looking for a fight.

Pandas can be bred with Bamboo; feed it to two adults and they produce a baby that grows up over about twenty minutes.

All told, the Panda is a low-risk part of the world that rewards patience more than aggression.

Panda commands

Cheats have to be on in that world before the panda appears. It needs 1.3 by 1.25 blocks of space to stand in.
CommandWhat it does
/summon minecraft:pandaPuts a panda on the block you are standing on.
/give @p minecraft:panda_spawn_eggHands you the panda spawn egg, so you can place pandas where you want them.
/kill @e[type=minecraft:panda]Removes every panda that is loaded around you.

Entity id minecraft:panda, spawn egg minecraft:panda_spawn_egg.

Panda farm

Build a panda farm around the one rule the game applies to every panda. Spawns on grass blocks in Jungle biomes, requires bamboo within 5 blocks.

Of the 2 biome spawn lists the panda stands on, Bamboo Jungle gives the panda its largest share at 47.1%, so a panda platform there fills faster than the same build anywhere else.

The game puts 1 to 2 pandas down per roll, so a wide panda floor beats a tall one.

Breeding beats waiting on spawns here: bamboo given to two adults produces a baby, and the pen keeps working in a lit, walled space where nothing new would ever spawn.

Each kill is worth 1 to 3 experience and up to 1 bamboo, so the size of the panda farm follows the number you need of that one item.

Panda version history

Minecraft 1.14 brought the panda in on 23 April 2019, 7 years of panda by now.

6 other mobs here came with it: the fox, the trader llama, the ravager, the pillager, the cat and the wandering trader. Of the 88 mobs we list, 55 were in the game before the panda and 26 arrived after it.

Every panda figure on this page is read from Minecraft Java 26.2 as it stands today, not from the version above.
