Overview

A Fox is a passive mob: it will not hunt a player down, though its attack damage is not zero, because it uses that on other mobs or in self-defence.

Foxes make their home in the Overworld, turning up in Taiga, Old Growth Taiga, Snowy Taiga, and Grove.

What sets it apart is its behaviour: nocturnal, sleeps during the day.

It carries 10 health points, 5 hearts, and yields 1 to 3 experience when it dies.

It was first added in 1.14 and has been a fixture of Minecraft ever since.

Also worth noting: Can also be bred with Glow Berries.

Even without combat or loot to speak of, the Fox adds character to the worlds it lives in and often plays a quiet supporting role in the wider ecosystem.

Spawning

Foxes spawn in Taiga, Old Growth Taiga, Snowy Taiga, and Grove.

Because it appears across 5 different biomes, it is one of the easier mobs to track down, and heading to any of them should turn one up before long.

Spawns on grass blocks in groups of 2-4. Snow foxes spawn in snowy taiga variants.

They tend to arrive in clusters of 2-4 rather than alone, so expect to meet more than one at a time.

Naturally spawned foxes will despawn over time when no player is nearby; naming one with a name tag or leading it away on a lead keeps it permanent.

With no attack to worry about, the Fox is something you gather or farm rather than fight.

Where the Fox spawns

Grove is where it stands strongest: weight 4 on the creature list and 30.8% of it, arriving 2 to 4 at a time. There it shares the list with Rabbit at 8 and Wolf at 1, 13 weight together, of which 4 is fox. The other 4 biomes on its list run from 13.3% down to 13.3%.

BiomeWeightShareGroup
Grove430.8%2 to 4
Old Growth Pine Taiga813.3%2 to 4
Old Growth Spruce Taiga813.3%2 to 4
Snowy Taiga813.3%2 to 4
Taiga813.3%2 to 4

Drops

Do not expect loot from the Fox: it has an empty drop table and yields only XP.

The value of the Fox is in what it does while alive, its behaviour and the role it plays in the world, rather than anything you collect by killing it, so there is little reason to hunt one for materials.

If you are after specific items, the Fox is not your source for them; look to mobs with populated drop tables or to mining and trading instead.

You also collect 1 to 3 experience for every Fox you defeat.

Since there is nothing to pick up, you do not need to worry about a hopper or collection system for foxes; they leave the ground exactly as they found it.

Because the Fox is harmless and breeds, the efficient long-term approach is a small enclosed pen where a breeding pair keeps replacing what you harvest, rather than hunting wild ones down one by one.

The game rolls nothing for it when it dies, so it leaves nothing behind at all.

Fox: 1.27% of its category, rank 29 of 52

On 5 of the 66 biome lists (5 spawn entries in total), and 1.27% of every spawn the game puts in its creature group is a fox.

Coming the other way, a fox hit is 10% of a player's 20 health, 10 of them a full bar, all out of the fox's attack damage attribute of 2.

Behavior & Combat

Behaviourally, nocturnal, sleeps during the day. Can pick up items in its mouth. Attacks chickens, rabbits, cod, salmon, and baby turtles. Trusts players who bred them.

It notices a target from 32 blocks, 10th of 88 for follow range, with the zombified piglin its nearest at 35.

Its 10 health (5 hearts) comes with an attack damage attribute of 2 on paper, not because it hunts you, but because that is what its attack is worth when it does use it.

Foxes can be bred with Sweet Berries; feed it to two adults and they produce a baby that grows up over about twenty minutes.

All told, the Fox is a low-risk part of the world that rewards patience more than aggression.

Fox commands

Cheats have to be on in that world before the fox appears. It needs 0.6 by 0.7 blocks of space to stand in.
CommandWhat it does
/summon minecraft:foxPuts a fox on the block you are standing on.
/give @p minecraft:fox_spawn_eggHands you the fox spawn egg, so you can place foxes where you want them.
/kill @e[type=minecraft:fox]Removes every fox that is loaded around you.

Entity id minecraft:fox, spawn egg minecraft:fox_spawn_egg.

Fox farm

A fox farm copies the rule the game already uses for fox spawns. Spawns on grass blocks in groups of 2-4. Snow foxes spawn in snowy taiga variants.

Grove is where the fox has the biggest slice of the roll, 30.8% across the 5 lists the fox appears on, and that is the biome to build a fox farm in.

The game puts 2 to 4 foxes down per roll, so a wide fox floor beats a tall one.

Breeding beats waiting on spawns here: sweet berries given to two adults produces a baby, and the pen keeps working in a lit, walled space where nothing new would ever spawn.

1 to 3 experience per killGrove at 30.8%

Fox version history

23 April 2019 is the day the fox arrived, in Minecraft 1.14, and the fox has been part of the game for 7 years since.

6 other mobs here came with it: the panda, the trader llama, the ravager, the pillager, the cat and the wandering trader. 55 of our 88 mobs are older than the fox, 26 are younger.

Every fox figure on this page is read from Minecraft Java 26.2 as it stands today, not from the version above.
