Slime
hostileOurs, not the game's own: how a slime behaves. Same on Bedrock v1.26.40.05 for weight. Checked 2026-08-22, and here is how we check.
Overview
In Minecraft, the Slime is classified as a hostile mob: it will attack players on sight whenever it is able to reach them.
Slimes make their home in the Overworld, turning up in Swamp and Slime Chunks (below Y=40).
Its defining trait is simple: bounces toward players.
It carries 1 to 16 health points, 0.5 to 8 hearts, rolled fresh when it spawns, and yields 1 to 4 experience when it dies.
The Slime has been part of the game since version Alpha v1.0.11.
One thing worth knowing: Swamp spawning increases during full moons.
Knowing how the Slime behaves is mostly about survival: recognising it early and reacting correctly is what keeps a night-time excursion from ending in a respawn.
Damage by Difficulty
Spawning
Slimes spawn in Swamp and Slime Chunks (below Y=40).
Because it appears across 53 different biomes, it is one of the easier mobs to track down, and heading to any of them should turn one up before long.
In swamps: spawns at light level 7 or less between Y=51-69. In slime chunks: spawns below Y=40 at any light level.
Height matters too: these spawns are tied to between Y=51 and Y=69, so the vertical slice you build or explore at directly affects how many you encounter.
If you want to farm slimes, build the spawning platform inside one of these biomes and keep the surrounding area dark.

Wooded BadlandsWhere the Slime spawns
Badlands, Beach, Birch Forest and Cherry Grove are where it stands strongest: weight 100 on the monster list and 19.4% of it, arriving 1 to 4 at a time. There it shares the list with Creeper at 100, Skeleton at 100, Spider at 100, Zombie at 95 and Enderman at 10 and 2 more, 515 weight together, of which 100 is slime. The other 15 biomes on its list run from 19.3% down to 8%.
Drops
Killing a Slime produces the following loot:
Nothing here is guaranteed: a kill can give you 0 to 2 Slimeballs only in specific situations.
In terms of experience, each kill is worth 1 to 4 XP orbs.
Farming slimes is the standard way to stockpile slimeballs in quantity.
The Looting enchantment on your sword raises the quantity and, for many of these items, the drop chance of the rarer rolls, so it is well worth using when you grind this mob.
With nothing guaranteed, output is swingy: over many kills the averages hold, but any single Slime may give you little, so farm in volume rather than expecting a jackpot each time.
| Item | Count | Chance | Conditions |
|---|---|---|---|
| Slimeball | 0 to 2 | situational | Looting III up to 5 |
The same Slimeball comes off .

Its health is not fixed: health is the size multiplied by itself, and a slime spawns at size 1, 2 or 4.
Experience: the experience equals the size it was killed at, so 1, 2 or 4.
Slime: 15.28% of its category, rank 4 of 52
On 53 of the 66 biome lists (55 spawn entries in total), and 15.28% of every spawn the game puts in its monster group is a slime.

On the receiving end a slime takes 20% off a player's 20 health per hit, so 5 of them land the kill; that share is the slime's 4 damage on Normal. On Easy the same slime hit is 15%, on Hard 30%, so 7 hits against 4. On health, attack and what a kill yields a slime reads exactly like the magma cube. 55 spawn entries against 2 spawn entries for the magma cube is the split, how often the biome files name them, counted over the spawn lists.
Behavior & Combat
In the field, bounces toward players. Splits into 2-4 smaller slimes when killed (large > medium > small). Only small slimes drop slimeballs.
It can hit you for 3 on Easy, 4 on Normal and 6 on Hard, while its own 1 to 16 health (0.5 to 8 hearts) determines how many blows it takes to kill.
The fastest way to win is to lean on what it fears: Fire and Fall damage.
The practical takeaway is to respect its strengths, exploit the weaknesses listed above, and you will rarely lose a fight you choose to take.
Slime commands
| Command | What it does |
|---|---|
| /summon minecraft:slime | Puts a slime on the block you are standing on. |
| /give @p minecraft:slime_spawn_egg | Hands you the slime spawn egg, so you can place slimes where you want them. |
| /kill @e[type=minecraft:slime] | Removes every slime that is loaded around you. |
Entity id minecraft:slime, spawn egg minecraft:slime_spawn_egg.
Slime farm
A slime farm copies the rule the game already uses for slime spawns. In swamps: spawns at light level 7 or less between Y=51-69. In slime chunks: spawns below Y=40 at any light level.
Badlands is where the slime has the biggest slice of the roll, 19.4% across the 55 lists the slime appears on, and that is the biome to build a slime farm in.
1 to 4 slimes arrive per roll, so give the slime platform width instead of stacking it.
Each kill is worth 1 to 4 experience and up to 2 slimeballs, or 5 with Looting III, so the size of the slime farm follows the number you need of that one item.
Slime version history
Minecraft Alpha v1.0.11 brought the slime in on 22 July 2010, 16 years of slime by now.
No other mob on this site arrived in Alpha v1.0.11, so the slime is the only page here that carries that version. Of the 88 mobs we list, 8 were in the game before the slime and 79 arrived after it.
Every slime figure on this page is read from Minecraft Java 26.2 as it stands today, not from the version above.
What Slime sounds like
Turn subtitles on and every slime sound names itself in the corner of the screen. These are the 4 lines a slime can put there, and you can play any of them yourself with /playsound minecraft:entity.slime.hurt master @p.
