Trader Llama
neutralTameableBreedableOurs, not the game's own: how a trader llama behaves. No overlap with Bedrock v1.26.40.05. Checked 2026-08-22, and here is how we check.
Overview
The Trader Llama is a neutral mob in Minecraft, which means it is not hostile on sight, and its own behaviour decides when that changes: accompanies Wandering Traders, protecting them by spitting at hostile mobs.
Unlike most creatures, the Trader Llama does not spawn naturally in the world. Spawns with Wandering Traders. Does not spawn naturally on its own.
What sets it apart is its behaviour: accompanies Wandering Traders, protecting them by spitting at hostile mobs.
It carries 15 to 30 health points, 7.5 to 15 hearts, rolled fresh when it spawns, and yields 1 to 3 experience when it dies.
Players have been encountering the Trader Llama since the 1.14 update.
One thing worth knowing: Can be bred with regular llamas.
For many players the appeal of the Trader Llama is companionship: once tamed it becomes a loyal helper rather than just scenery.
Damage by Difficulty
Spawning
Spawns with Wandering Traders. Does not spawn naturally on its own.
As a result, the Trader Llama never shows up during ordinary world generation or the normal mob-spawning cycle.
Walking among trader llamas is safe only on their terms: accompanies Wandering Traders, protecting them by spitting at hostile mobs.
Another mob's spawn rule points back at it: the wandering trader, which randomly spawns near the player with 2 Trader Llamas.
Drops
The Trader Llama drop table breaks down like this:
Nothing here is guaranteed: a kill can give you 0 to 2 Leather.
In terms of experience, each kill is worth 1 to 3 XP orbs.
Farming trader llamas is the standard way to stockpile leather in quantity.
With nothing guaranteed, output is swingy: over many kills the averages hold, but any single Trader Llama may give you little, so farm in volume rather than expecting a jackpot each time.
| Item | Count | Chance | Conditions |
|---|---|---|---|
| Leather | 0 to 2 | not every kill | Looting III up to 5 |
Trader Llama attributes
| Attribute | Value |
|---|---|
| 15 to 30 points | |
| 0.9 x 1.87 blocks | |
| 1.777 blocks | |
| 10 chunks | |
| 32 blocks | |
| 0.175 | |
| 1 to 3 |
Its health is not fixed: each one starts at 15 and adds two rolls when it spawns, one of 0 to 7 and one of 0 to 8.
Where the Trader Llama lands, it has company: the donkey on the same 0.175 movement speed.
Trader Llama: 1 item per kill over 1 drop row
A trader llama averages 1 Leather a kill on the rolls Minecraft Java 26.2 makes for it, before Looting, which puts a full stack of 64 Leather at 64 kills.
| Item | Average per kill |
|---|---|
| 1 |
How this average is worked out
| Weapon | Attack damage | Full swings | Swings per 64 Leather |
|---|---|---|---|
| 4 | 8 | 512 | |
| 5 | 6 | 384 | |
| 6 | 5 | 320 | |
| 7 | 5 | 320 | |
| 8 | 4 | 256 | |
| 9 | 4 | 256 | |
| 10 | 3 | 192 |
Turned around, 20 unblocked trader llama hits empty a player's 20 health, 5% of the bar at a time, which is what the trader llama's 1 damage on Normal buys it. The llama matches every number above, health, attack and yield alike, so how often the biome files name them is the honest way to tell a trader llama apart: 0 spawn entries here against 4 spawn entries for the llama, counted over the spawn lists.
Behavior & Combat
In the field, accompanies Wandering Traders, protecting them by spitting at hostile mobs. Becomes tameable after the trader despawns.
It notices a target from 32 blocks, 10th of 88 for follow range, with the zombified piglin its nearest at 35.
Its combat profile is 15 to 30 health (7.5 to 15 hearts) with attacks dealing 1 damage on every difficulty.
To deal with one efficiently, exploit its weaknesses: it is vulnerable to Fire and Fall damage.
Since it can attack from range, closing the distance quickly or breaking line of sight with cover is often safer than trading hits at a distance.
You can tame the Trader Llama: repeatedly mount the llama until hearts appear, after the Wandering Trader has despawned or been killed.
Breeding is straightforward: Hay Bale given to two trader llamas starts love mode and yields offspring.
Bottom line: tame one and the Trader Llama stops being an obstacle and becomes an asset you will want to protect.
Trader Llama commands
| Command | What it does |
|---|---|
| /summon minecraft:trader_llama | Puts a trader llama on the block you are standing on. |
| /give @p minecraft:trader_llama_spawn_egg | Hands you the trader llama spawn egg, so you can place trader llamas where you want them. |
| /kill @e[type=minecraft:trader_llama] | Removes every trader llama that is loaded around you. |
Entity id minecraft:trader_llama, spawn egg minecraft:trader_llama_spawn_egg.
Trader Llama farm
The trader llama does not roll onto a platform, so a farm is a pen: two adults and enough hay bale keeps it going, and the pen has to grow with the herd rather than the spawning space.
Each kill is worth 1 to 3 experience and up to 2 leather, or 5 with Looting III, which is the number to scale the trader llama farm against.
Trader Llama version history
23 April 2019 is the day the trader llama arrived, in Minecraft 1.14, and the trader llama has been part of the game for 7 years since.
6 other mobs here came with it: the fox, the panda, the ravager, the pillager, the cat and the wandering trader. 55 of our 88 mobs are older than the trader llama, 26 are younger.
All of the trader llama data above is taken from Java 26.2, so it describes the trader llama as it is today.
