Overview

A Warden is a boss: a rare, high-health encounter with its own boss health bar and unique mechanics.

Wardens make their home in the Overworld, turning up in Deep Dark.

What sets it apart is its behaviour: blind but detects vibrations and smell.

It carries 500 health points, 250 hearts, and yields 5 experience when it dies.

It was first added in 1.19 and has been a fixture of Minecraft ever since.

One thing worth knowing: Drops only 5 XP intentionally.

Beating the Warden is a milestone: it gatekeeps progression and the reward it leaves behind is worth the effort of preparing for the fight.

Spawning

Natural spawns for the Warden occur in Deep Dark.

Summoned when Sculk Shriekers are activated 3 times. Does not spawn naturally.

Naturally spawned wardens will despawn over time when no player is nearby; naming one with a name tag or leading it away on a lead keeps it permanent.

Treat each Warden as a set-piece fight: there is no endless supply, so going in with full gear matters.

Drops

The Warden drop table breaks down like this:

Every kill yields 1 Sculk Catalyst.

The headline reward is the 5 experience it drops, far beyond what any common mob gives.

Farming wardens is the standard way to stockpile sculk catalysts in quantity.

Because the kill is so rare, plan to be standing where the loot lands so none of it is lost to lava, the void, or a long fall.

The Warden shares this stretch of the scale: the breeze on the same 24 follow range, the wither at 300 health, the nearest we list to its 500, the iron golem at 15 attack damage, the nearest we list to its 30 and the ender dragon at 200 health, the highest we list after the wither.

Warden: 1 item per kill over 1 drop row

64 warden kills fill a stack of 64 Sculk Catalyst, because the ranges Minecraft Java 26.2 rolls for it come out at 1 per kill before Looting.

Coming the other way, a warden hit is 150% of a player's 20 health, 1 of them a full bar, all out of the warden's 30 damage on Normal. On Easy the same warden hit is 80%, on Hard 225%, so 2 hits against 1.

Behavior & Combat

Blind but detects vibrations and smell. Sonic boom ranged attack bypasses armor and shields. Most powerful non-boss mob. Meant to be avoided, not fought.

Hitting it barely moves it: 100% knockback resistance, where almost every other mob has none.

In a fight it brings 500 health (250 hearts) to the table and hits for 16 on Easy, 30 on Normal and 45 on Hard, so come with enchanted armour and plenty of healing.

To deal with one efficiently, exploit its weaknesses: it is vulnerable to Sneaking (reduces detection), Wool blocks (muffles vibrations), and Distractions (throwing items).

In short, do not wander into a Warden fight casually: plan the encounter, bring the right gear, and the rewards make it worthwhile.

Warden commands

Cheats have to be on in that world before the warden appears. It needs 0.9 by 2.9 blocks of space to stand in.
CommandWhat it does
/summon minecraft:wardenPuts a warden on the block you are standing on.
/give @p minecraft:warden_spawn_eggHands you the warden spawn egg, so you can place wardens where you want them.
/kill @e[type=minecraft:warden]Removes every warden that is loaded around you.

Entity id minecraft:warden, spawn egg minecraft:warden_spawn_egg.

Warden farm

There is no platform that produces wardens. Summoned when Sculk Shriekers are activated 3 times. Does not spawn naturally. Anything you build has to feed that source instead of a dark floor.

Each kill is worth 5 experience and up to 1 sculk catalyst, and that figure is what decides how big the warden farm has to be.

5 experience per kill

Warden version history

7 June 2022 is the day the warden arrived, in Minecraft 1.19, and the warden has been part of the game for 4 years since.

3 other mobs here came with it: the frog, the tadpole and the allay. 71 of our 88 mobs are older than the warden, 13 are younger.

Every warden figure on this page is read from Minecraft Java 26.2 as it stands today, not from the version above.
