Vex
hostileOurs, not the game's own: how a vex behaves. Same on Bedrock v1.26.40.05 for health. Checked 2026-08-22, and here is how we check.
Overview
The Vex is a hostile mob in Minecraft, which means it will attack players on sight whenever it is able to reach them.
Unlike most creatures, the Vex does not spawn naturally in the world. Summoned by Evokers during combat. Does not spawn naturally.
In practice you will recognise it quickly, because tiny flying mob that phases through blocks.
With 14 HP (7 hearts) on its bar, killing one rewards 3 experience.
Players have been encountering the Vex since the 1.11 update.
A useful detail many players miss: Summoned in groups of 2-4 by evokers.
Knowing how the Vex behaves is mostly about survival: recognising it early and reacting correctly is what keeps a night-time excursion from ending in a respawn.
Damage by Difficulty
Spawning
Summoned by Evokers during combat. Does not spawn naturally.
Because of this, you will not find vexes by simply exploring; they have to be produced through the steps above.
Since no biome generates the Vex, you cannot farm it with a spawning floor: you have to keep its source going.
Drops
The Vex leaves behind nothing collectable on death; you gain experience but no loot.
Because there is nothing to harvest from its corpse, the reason to engage a Vex is almost always the experience or simply clearing it out of the way, not farming a resource.
If you are after specific items, the Vex is not your source for them; look to mobs with populated drop tables or to mining and trading instead.
You also collect 3 experience for every Vex you defeat.
Since there is nothing to pick up, you do not need to worry about a hopper or collection system for vexes; they leave the ground exactly as they found it.
The game rolls nothing for it when it dies, so it leaves nothing behind at all.
Vex attributes
| Attribute | Value |
|---|---|
| 0.4 x 0.8 blocks | |
| 0.519 blocks | |
| 8 chunks | |
| 16 blocks | |
| 3 | |
| 14 points | |
| 4 |
The Vex does not stand alone on these numbers: the sniffer on the same 14 health.
Vex: 3 values straight out of Minecraft Java 26.2
Nothing in the biome spawn lists and nothing in the rolls on death names the vex, so the numbers on this page come from one place only: the game's own entry for it in Minecraft Java 26.2sets 14 health, 4 attack damage and 16 blocks follow range.
| Weapon | Attack damage | Full swings |
|---|---|---|
| 4 | 4 | |
| 5 | 3 | |
| 6 | 3 | |
| 7 | 2 | |
| 8 | 2 | |
| 9 | 2 | |
| 10 | 2 |
Coming the other way, a vex hit is 45% of a player's 20 health, 3 of them a full bar, all out of the vex's 9 damage on Normal. On Easy the same vex hit is 25%, on Hard 65%, so 4 hits against 2.
Behavior & Combat
In the field, tiny flying mob that phases through blocks. Attacks players and villagers. Takes damage over time after 30-119 seconds (starts flickering).
Its 14 health is 47th of 80, just under the 15 of the nautilus.
On the offensive it deals 5 on Easy, 9 on Normal and 13 on Hard, and you will need to chew through 14 health (7 hearts) to bring one down.
To deal with one efficiently, exploit its weaknesses: it is vulnerable to Limited lifespan and All damage sources.
The practical takeaway is to respect its strengths, exploit the weaknesses listed above, and you will rarely lose a fight you choose to take.
Vex commands
| Command | What it does |
|---|---|
| /summon minecraft:vex | Puts a vex on the block you are standing on. |
| /give @p minecraft:vex_spawn_egg | Hands you the vex spawn egg, so you can place vexes where you want them. |
| /kill @e[type=minecraft:vex] | Removes every vex that is loaded around you. |
Entity id minecraft:vex, spawn egg minecraft:vex_spawn_egg.
Vex farm
There is no platform that produces vexes. Summoned by Evokers during combat. Does not spawn naturally. Anything you build has to feed that source instead of a dark floor.
Vex version history
Minecraft 1.11 brought the vex in on 14 November 2016, 9 years of vex by now.
3 other mobs here came with it: the llama, the evoker and the vindicator. 42 of our 88 mobs are older than the vex, 42 are younger.
All of the vex data above is taken from Java 26.2, so it describes the vex as it is today.
What Vex sounds like
Turn subtitles on and every vex sound names itself in the corner of the screen. These are the 4 lines a vex can put there, and you can play any of them yourself with /playsound minecraft:entity.vex.ambient master @p.
| Sound | What you hear |
|---|---|
| entity.vex.ambient | |
| entity.vex.hurt | |
| entity.vex.death | |
| entity.vex.charge |
