Overview

In Minecraft, the Bogged is classified as a hostile mob: it will attack players on sight whenever it is able to reach them.

Look for the Bogged across the Overworld; it is tied to Swamp, Mangrove Swamp, and Trial Chambers.

In practice you will recognise it quickly, because skeleton variant covered in moss and mushrooms.

It carries 16 health points, 8 hearts, and yields 5 experience when it dies.

The Bogged has been part of the game since version 1.21.

Also worth noting: One of the newer skeleton variants.

Knowing how the Bogged behaves is mostly about survival: recognising it early and reacting correctly is what keeps a night-time excursion from ending in a respawn.

Spawning

In the wild, the Bogged is generated in Swamp, Mangrove Swamp, and Trial Chambers.

The spawn table has no favourite: the Bogged takes up the same 5.8% of the list in Mangrove Swamp and Swamp, so head for whichever you can reach first.

Spawns in swamp biomes and from Trial Spawners in Trial Chambers.

Left alone far from any player, wild boggeds eventually despawn, so use a name tag if you want a specific one to stick around.

Farming boggeds is not a matter of a dark platform: it is the spawn rule above that a farm has to reproduce.

Where the Bogged spawns

Mangrove Swamp and Swamp are where it stands strongest: weight 30 on the monster list and 5.8% of it, arriving 4 at a time. There it shares the list with Slime at 101, Creeper at 100, Spider at 100, Zombie at 95 and Skeleton at 70 and 3 more, 516 weight together, of which 30 is bogged. That is the whole list.

Drops

The Bogged drop table breaks down like this:

Every kill yields 1 Mushroom (Brown or Red).

On top of that, you may come away with 0 to 2 Arrows, 0 to 2 Bones, 1 Tipped Arrow, and 0 to 2 Arrow of Poisons (usually, 50% chance).

In terms of experience, each kill is worth 5 XP orbs.

These are well worth keeping. Arrows of Poison inflict Poison I for 4 seconds.

The Looting enchantment on your sword raises the quantity and, for many of these items, the drop chance of the rarer rolls, so it is well worth using when you grind this mob.

Across many kills the guaranteed items pile up steadily while the chance-based extras trickle in, so consistent farming is the way to build a meaningful stockpile.

Bogged: 0.18% of its category, rank 47 of 52

On 2 of the 66 biome lists (2 spawn entries in total), and 0.18% of every spawn the game puts in its monster group is a bogged.

The ranges Minecraft Java 26.2 rolls for a bogged give 1 Arrow per kill, so 64 Arrow costs 64 kills before Looting. Bone comes in at 1 per bogged, so 64 kills before that stack is full. 1 further row sit under those, down to 0.5 Tipped Arrow per bogged and 128 kills a stack. 1 of those 3 rows (Tipped Arrow) only roll when a player lands the killing blow, so a bogged killed by a fall or another mob averages 2 items instead of 2.5.

Coming the other way, a bogged hit is 15% of a player's 20 health, 7 of them a full bar, all out of the bogged's 3 damage on Normal. On Easy the same bogged hit is 10%, on Hard 20%, so 10 hits against 5. Those same figures also describe the parched. Where a bogged parts company is how often the biome files name them: 2 spawn entries here, 1 spawn entry for the parched, counted over the spawn lists.

Behavior & Combat

Behaviourally, skeleton variant covered in moss and mushrooms. Shoots Arrows of Poison. Burns in sunlight like regular skeletons.

It can hit you for 2 on Easy, 3 on Normal and 4 on Hard, while its own 16 health (8 hearts) determines how many blows it takes to kill.

To deal with one efficiently, exploit its weaknesses: it is vulnerable to Sunlight, Smite enchantment, and Shields.

A sword enchanted with Smite shortens the fight considerably against this mob.

Since it can attack from range, closing the distance quickly or breaking line of sight with cover is often safer than trading hits at a distance.

It shoots Arrows of Poison but cannot be poisoned itself, since Poison does nothing to an undead mob, and the same wiring turns a splash of Healing into damage: 12.5 extra a hit from a Smite V sword finishes the job quickly against 16 health.

As an undead mob it catches fire in direct daylight, so during the day it will either burn up or scramble for shade and water, one reason these are mostly a night-time and cave threat.

The practical takeaway is to respect its strengths, exploit the weaknesses listed above, and you will rarely lose a fight you choose to take.

Bogged commands

Cheats have to be on in that world before the bogged appears. It needs 0.6 by 1.99 blocks of space to stand in.
CommandWhat it does
/summon minecraft:boggedPuts a bogged on the block you are standing on.
/give @p minecraft:bogged_spawn_eggHands you the bogged spawn egg, so you can place boggeds where you want them.
/kill @e[type=minecraft:bogged]Removes every bogged that is loaded around you.

Entity id minecraft:bogged, spawn egg minecraft:bogged_spawn_egg.

Bogged farm

Everything about a bogged farm follows the bogged spawn rule. Spawns in swamp biomes and from Trial Spawners in Trial Chambers.

The bogged is heaviest in Mangrove Swamp at 5.8%, out of the 2 biome spawn lists it stands on, so a bogged farm belongs there rather than in the first cave you find.

The game puts 4 boggeds down per roll, so a wide bogged floor beats a tall one.

Each kill is worth 5 experience and up to 2 arrows, or 5 with Looting III, so the size of the bogged farm follows the number you need of that one item.

Bogged version history

Minecraft 1.21 brought the bogged in on 13 June 2024, 2 years of bogged by now.

One other mob here came with it: the breeze. 78 of our 88 mobs are older than the bogged, 8 are younger.

The bogged numbers here come from Java 26.2, the version running now, and not from the one that introduced it.
