Mooshroom
passiveBreedableOurs, not the game's own: 1 drop that the rolls on death do not cover, how a mooshroom behaves. Same on Bedrock v1.26.40.05 for weight, group, health. Checked 2026-08-22, and here is how we check.
Overview
A Mooshroom is a passive mob: it will never attack a player and simply goes about its own behaviour.
You will normally come across mooshrooms in the Overworld, where they appear in Mushroom Fields.
Its defining trait is simple: acts like a cow.
Stat-wise it sits at 10 health (5 hearts), dropping 1 to 3 experience on death.
The Mooshroom has been part of the game since version 1.0.0.
One thing worth knowing: Brown mooshrooms give Suspicious Stew when milked with a bowl after being fed a flower.
Because it breeds and drops useful materials, the Mooshroom is a staple of self-sufficient survival bases, supplying raw beef on demand.
Spawning
In the wild, the Mooshroom is generated in Mushroom Fields.
That single-biome restriction means Mushroom Fields is the only place to look; if you are not there, you will not find one, so locating the biome is the real task.
Only spawns in Mushroom Fields biome on mycelium blocks.
Naturally spawned mooshrooms will despawn over time when no player is nearby; naming one with a name tag or leading it away on a lead keeps it permanent.
With no attack to worry about, the Mooshroom is something you gather or farm rather than fight.
Where the Mooshroom spawns
Mushroom Fields is where it stands strongest: weight 8 on the creature list and 100% of it, arriving 4 to 8 at a time. That is the whole list.
| Biome | Weight | Share | Group |
|---|---|---|---|
Mushroom Fields | 8 | 100% | 4 to 8 |
Drops
Killing a Mooshroom produces the following loot:
Every kill yields 1 to 3 Raw Beef and 5 Red Mushrooms.
On top of that, you may come away with 0 to 2 Leather.
You also collect 1 to 3 experience for every Mooshroom you defeat.
These are well worth keeping. Red mooshrooms struck by lightning become brown mooshrooms.
Across many kills the guaranteed items pile up steadily while the chance-based extras trickle in, so consistent farming is the way to build a meaningful stockpile.
Because the Mooshroom is harmless and breeds, the efficient long-term approach is a small enclosed pen where a breeding pair keeps replacing what you harvest, rather than hunting wild ones down one by one.
| Item | Count | Chance | Conditions |
|---|---|---|---|
| Leather | 0 to 2 | not every kill | Looting III up to 5 |
| Raw Beef | 1 to 3 | always | Looting III up to 6, cooked when burnt |
| Red Mushroom | 5 | always | equipment |
It is not the only source of Raw Beef: the cow drops 1 to 3.

Mooshroom: 1.52% of its category, rank 25 of 52
On 1 of the 66 biome lists (1 spawn entry in total), and 1.52% of every spawn the game puts in its creature group is a mooshroom.
32 mooshroom kills fill a stack of 64 Raw Beef, because the ranges Minecraft Java 26.2 rolls for it come out at 2 per kill before Looting. Leather runs at 1 a kill, 64 mooshroom kills for a stack of its own.
How this average is worked out
| Weapon | Attack damage | Full swings | Swings per 64 Raw Beef |
|---|---|---|---|
| 4 | 3 | 96 | |
| 5 | 2 | 64 | |
| 6 | 2 | 64 | |
| 7 | 2 | 64 | |
| 8 | 2 | 64 | |
| 9 | 2 | 64 | |
| 10 | 1 | 32 |
The cow matches every number above, health, attack and yield alike, so how often the biome files name them is the honest way to tell a mooshroom apart: 1 spawn entry here against 24 spawn entries for the cow, counted over the spawn lists.
Behavior & Combat
In the field, acts like a cow. Can be milked with a bowl for Mushroom Stew. Shearing removes mushrooms and converts to a regular cow.
At 0.2 it is 53rd of 72 for speed, just below the horse at 0.225.
Dealing zero damage, the Mooshroom is one of the safest creatures to be around.
To breed them, hand Wheat to a pair of adults; they enter love mode and a baby Mooshroom appears, maturing in roughly twenty minutes.
All told, the Mooshroom is a low-risk part of the world that rewards patience more than aggression.
Mooshroom commands
| Command | What it does |
|---|---|
| /summon minecraft:mooshroom | Puts a mooshroom on the block you are standing on. |
| /give @p minecraft:mooshroom_spawn_egg | Hands you the mooshroom spawn egg, so you can place mooshrooms where you want them. |
| /kill @e[type=minecraft:mooshroom] | Removes every mooshroom that is loaded around you. |
Entity id minecraft:mooshroom, spawn egg minecraft:mooshroom_spawn_egg.
Mooshroom farm
Everything about a mooshroom farm follows the mooshroom spawn rule. Only spawns in Mushroom Fields biome on mycelium blocks.
Of the 1 biome spawn list the mooshroom stands on, Mushroom Fields gives the mooshroom its largest share at 100%, so a mooshroom platform there fills faster than the same build anywhere else.
4 to 8 mooshrooms arrive per roll, so give the mooshroom platform width instead of stacking it.
Breeding beats waiting on spawns here: wheat given to two adults produces a baby, and the pen keeps working in a lit, walled space where nothing new would ever spawn.
Each kill is worth 1 to 3 experience and up to 5 red mushrooms, and that figure is what decides how big the mooshroom farm has to be.
Mooshroom version history
The mooshroom was added in Minecraft 1.0.0, which came out on 17 November 2011, so the mooshroom has been in the game for 14 years.
4 other mobs here came with it: the magma cube, the blaze, the ender dragon and the snow golem. Of the 88 mobs we list, 17 were in the game before the mooshroom and 66 arrived after it.
All of the mooshroom data above is taken from Java 26.2, so it describes the mooshroom as it is today.
What Mooshroom sounds like
Turn subtitles on and every mooshroom sound names itself in the corner of the screen. These are the 4 lines a mooshroom can put there, and you can play any of them yourself with /playsound minecraft:entity.cow.ambient master @p.
