Skeleton
hostileOurs, not the game's own: 1 drop that the rolls on death do not cover, how a skeleton behaves. Bedrock v1.26.40.05 differs: spawn weight 100 on most Java biome lists (it runs from 20 to 100) against 50 on Bedrock; groups of 4 on Java against 2 on Bedrock. Checked 2026-08-22, and here is how we check.
Overview
A Skeleton is a hostile mob: it will attack players on sight whenever it is able to reach them.
Look for the Skeleton across the Overworld; it is tied to all Overworld biomes.
What sets it apart is its behaviour: ranged attacker with a bow.
It carries 20 health points, 10 hearts, and yields 5 experience when it dies.
Players have been encountering the Skeleton since the Classic 0.24_SURVIVAL_TEST update.
A useful detail many players miss: Flee from wolves.
Knowing how the Skeleton behaves is mostly about survival: recognising it early and reacting correctly is what keeps a night-time excursion from ending in a respawn.
Damage by Difficulty
Spawning
In the wild, the Skeleton is generated in all Overworld biomes.
Because it appears across 54 different biomes, it is one of the easier mobs to track down, and heading to any of them should turn one up before long.
Spawns at light level 0 on solid blocks in the Overworld.
Pay attention to lighting: a light level of 0 is required, which is exactly what makes torch placement such an effective way to suppress or encourage these spawns.
Naturally spawned skeletons will despawn over time when no player is nearby; naming one with a name tag or leading it away on a lead keeps it permanent.
For a reliable Skeleton farm, set your spawning floor within the biomes above and light everything else nearby so spawns funnel to one spot.

Where the Skeleton spawns
Soul Sand Valley is where it stands strongest: weight 20 on the monster list and 28.2% of it, arriving 2 to 5 at a time. There it shares the list with Ghast at 50 and Enderman at 1, 71 weight together, of which 20 is skeleton. The other 53 biomes on its list run from 19.4% down to 3.9%.
- Inside a fortress the biome list is replaced: weight 2 there, 7.1% of the monster list, in groups of 5.
It does not have that fortress list to itself: the zombified piglin at weight 5, the magma cube at weight 3, the blaze at weight 10 and the wither skeleton at weight 8.
Drops
Killing a Skeleton produces the following loot:
Nothing here is guaranteed: a kill can give you 0 to 2 Arrows, 0 to 2 Bones, and 1 Bow (occasionally, 8.5% chance).
You also collect 5 experience for every Skeleton you defeat.
These are well worth keeping. Bones are essential for taming wolves and crafting bone meal.
The Looting enchantment on your sword raises the quantity and, for many of these items, the drop chance of the rarer rolls, so it is well worth using when you grind this mob.
With nothing guaranteed, output is swingy: over many kills the averages hold, but any single Skeleton may give you little, so farm in volume rather than expecting a jackpot each time.
| Item | Count | Chance | Conditions |
|---|---|---|---|
| Arrow | 0 to 2 | not every kill | Looting III up to 5 |
| Bone | 0 to 2 | not every kill | Looting III up to 5 |
| Bow | 1 | 8.5% | equipment |
The same Arrow comes off the stray drops 0 to 2, the bogged the same and the parched the same.

The Skeleton does not stand alone on these numbers: the creeper, level with it on health, speed and follow range alike.
Skeleton: 15.03% of its category, rank 6 of 52
On 54 of the 66 biome lists (54 spawn entries in total), and 15.03% of every spawn the game puts in its monster group is a skeleton.
64 skeleton kills fill a stack of 64 Arrow, because the ranges Minecraft Java 26.2 rolls for it come out at 1 per kill before Looting. Bone runs at 1 a kill, 64 skeleton kills for a stack of its own.
How this average is worked out
| Weapon | Attack damage | Full swings | Swings per 64 Arrow |
|---|---|---|---|
| 4 | 5 | 320 | |
| 5 | 4 | 256 | |
| 6 | 4 | 256 | |

| 10 | 2 | 128 |
Coming the other way, a skeleton hit is 15% of a player's 20 health, 7 of them a full bar, all out of the skeleton's 3 damage on Normal. On Easy the same skeleton hit is 10%, on Hard 20%, so 10 hits against 5.
Behavior & Combat
In the field, ranged attacker with a bow. Burns in sunlight (seeks shade or water). Strafes while shooting. Better accuracy at closer range.
Its 20 health is 23rd of 80, just over the 16 of the spider.
Its combat profile is 20 health (10 hearts) with attacks dealing 2 on Easy, 3 on Normal and 4 on Hard.
The fastest way to win is to lean on what it fears: Sunlight, Fire, Smite enchantment, and Shields (block arrows).
A sword enchanted with Smite shortens the fight considerably against this mob.
Since it can attack from range, closing the distance quickly or breaking line of sight with cover is often safer than trading hits at a distance.
As an undead mob it catches fire in direct daylight, so during the day it will either burn up or scramble for shade and water, one reason these are mostly a night-time and cave threat.
Being undead flips its potions around: a splash of Healing wounds it, a Potion of Harming would heal it, and with 20 health and no armour in the way a Smite V sword's extra 12.5 damage a hit is the quickest way through.
The practical takeaway is to respect its strengths, exploit the weaknesses listed above, and you will rarely lose a fight you choose to take.
Skeleton commands
| Command | What it does |
|---|---|
| /summon minecraft:skeleton | Puts a skeleton on the block you are standing on. |
| /give @p minecraft:skeleton_spawn_egg | Hands you the skeleton spawn egg, so you can place skeletons where you want them. |
| /kill @e[type=minecraft:skeleton] | Removes every skeleton that is loaded around you. |
Entity id minecraft:skeleton, spawn egg minecraft:skeleton_spawn_egg.
Skeleton farm
Everything about a skeleton farm follows the skeleton spawn rule. Spawns at light level 0 on solid blocks in the Overworld.
Of the 54 biome spawn lists the skeleton stands on, Soul Sand Valley gives the skeleton its largest share at 28.2%, so a skeleton platform there fills faster than the same build anywhere else.
Each roll brings 2 to 5 skeletons at once, which is why a skeleton farm wants floor area rather than height.
Each kill is worth 5 experience and up to 2 arrows, or 5 with Looting III, which is the number to scale the skeleton farm against.
Skeleton version history
The skeleton goes back to Classic 0.24_SURVIVAL_TEST, from before the game had numbered releases, which makes the skeleton one of the 8 oldest mobs on this site.
4 other mobs here came with it: the cow, the pig, the zombie and the creeper. Of the 88 mobs we list, 0 were in the game before the skeleton and 80 arrived after it.
The skeleton numbers here come from Java 26.2, the version running now, and not from the one that introduced it.
