Overview

In Minecraft, the Camel is classified as a passive mob: it will never attack a player and simply goes about its own behaviour.

Camels make their home in the Overworld, turning up in Desert Village.

What sets it apart is its behaviour: can carry two players.

Stat-wise it sits at 32 health (16 hearts), dropping 1 to 3 experience on death.

Players have been encountering the Camel since the 1.20 update.

Even without combat or loot to speak of, the Camel adds character to the worlds it lives in and often plays a quiet supporting role in the wider ecosystem.

Spawning

Natural spawns for the Camel occur in Desert Village.

The spawn table draws that line differently: it gives the Camel one biome, Desert, and has no entry at all for Desert Village.

One camel spawns in each desert village.

Left alone far from any player, wild camels eventually despawn, so use a name tag if you want a specific one to stick around.

Because it is harmless, the Camel is mostly useful as a renewable source of its drops, and you can let a small population breed up over time.

Spawn Biomes

Where the Camel spawns

Desert is where it stands strongest: weight 1 on the creature list and 7.7% of it, arriving 1 at a time. There it shares the list with Rabbit at 12, 13 weight together, of which 1 is camel. That is the whole list.

Drops

When killed, the Camel drops no items at all; its only reward is experience.

The value of the Camel is in what it does while alive, its behaviour and the role it plays in the world, rather than anything you collect by killing it, so there is little reason to hunt one for materials.

If you are after specific items, the Camel is not your source for them; look to mobs with populated drop tables or to mining and trading instead.

In terms of experience, each kill is worth 1 to 3 XP orbs.

Since there is nothing to pick up, you do not need to worry about a hopper or collection system for camels; they leave the ground exactly as they found it.

Because the Camel is harmless and breeds, the efficient long-term approach is a small enclosed pen where a breeding pair keeps replacing what you harvest, rather than hunting wild ones down one by one.

The game rolls nothing for it when it dies, so it leaves nothing behind at all.

Where the Camel lands, it has company: the happy ghast, whose 0.05 movement speed has nothing we list nearer than this 0.09 and the camel husk on the same 32 health.

Camel: 0.12% of its category, rank 49 of 52

On 1 of the 66 biome lists (1 spawn entry in total), and 0.12% of every spawn the game puts in its creature group is a camel.

Behavior & Combat

In the field, can carry two players. Has a dash ability. Sits down periodically. Tall enough that most hostile mobs cannot reach riders.

At 0.09 it is 70th of 72 for speed, just below the sniffer at 0.1.

It is completely harmless and deals no damage, so the only risk it poses is wandering into lava, cacti or a long fall.

Breeding is straightforward: Cactus given to two camels starts love mode and yields offspring.

Once prepared it can be ridden, which makes it as much a means of transport as a creature to study.

All told, the Camel is a low-risk part of the world that rewards patience more than aggression.

Camel commands

Cheats have to be on in that world before the camel appears. It needs 1.7 by 2.375 blocks of space to stand in.
CommandWhat it does
/summon minecraft:camelPuts a camel on the block you are standing on.
/give @p minecraft:camel_spawn_eggHands you the camel spawn egg, so you can place camels where you want them.
/kill @e[type=minecraft:camel]Removes every camel that is loaded around you.

Entity id minecraft:camel, spawn egg minecraft:camel_spawn_egg.

Camel farm

Build a camel farm around the one rule the game applies to every camel. One camel spawns in each desert village.

The camel is heaviest in Desert at 7.7%, out of the 1 biome spawn list it stands on, so a camel farm belongs there rather than in the first cave you find.

Breeding beats waiting on spawns here: cactus given to two adults produces a baby, and the pen keeps working in a lit, walled space where nothing new would ever spawn.

1 to 3 experience per killDesert at 7.7%

Camel version history

The camel was added in Minecraft 1.20, which came out on 2 June 2023, so the camel has been in the game for 3 years.

One other mob here came with it: the sniffer. 75 of our 88 mobs are older than the camel, 11 are younger.

Every camel figure on this page is read from Minecraft Java 26.2 as it stands today, not from the version above.
