hostileOurs, not the game's own: where it turns up, how a creaking behaves. Same on Bedrock v1.26.40.05 for health. Checked 2026-08-22, and how
Overview
A Creaking is a hostile mob: it will attack players on sight whenever it is able to reach them.
Creakings make their home in the Overworld, turning up in Pale Garden.
In practice you will recognise it quickly, because freezes the moment you look at it and moves only while you look away, and hitting it does nothing: the damage lands on the creaking heart that produced it.
It carries 1 health points, 0.5 hearts, and yields no experience when it dies.
It was first added in 1.21.4 and has been a fixture of Minecraft ever since.
Knowing how the Creaking behaves is mostly about survival: recognising it early and reacting correctly is what keeps a night-time excursion from ending in a respawn.
Damage by Difficulty
Spawning
In the wild, the Creaking is generated in Pale Garden.
Comes out of a creaking heart in the pale garden at night, and there is one at a time per heart.
Like most hostile mobs in the Overworld, it requires darkness (a block light level of 0) to spawn, so lighting an area up with torches stops it from appearing there.
Left alone far from any player, wild creakings eventually despawn, so use a name tag if you want a specific one to stick around.
If you want to farm creakings, build the spawning platform inside one of these biomes and keep the surrounding area dark.
Pale GardenDrops
The Creaking drops neither items nor experience, which is unusual: it exists purely as an ambient or utility creature rather than a resource.
Because there is nothing to harvest from its corpse, the reason to engage a Creaking is almost always the experience or simply clearing it out of the way, not farming a resource.
If you are after specific items, the Creaking is not your source for them; look to mobs with populated drop tables or to mining and trading instead.
Since there is nothing to pick up, you do not need to worry about a hopper or collection system for creakings; they leave the ground exactly as they found it.
The game rolls nothing for it when it dies, so it leaves nothing behind at all.
Creaking attributes
| Attribute | Value |
|---|---|
| 1 points | |
| 0.9 x 2.7 blocks | |
| 2.3 blocks | |
| 8 chunks | |
| 0 | |
| 32 blocks | |
| 0.4 | |
| 3 |
The Creaking does not stand alone on these numbers: the rabbit at 3 health, the nearest we list to its 1, the piglin brute at 0.35 movement speed, the nearest we list to its 0.4, the cod at 3 health, the nearest we list to its 1 and the salmon at that same figure.
Creaking: 4 values straight out of Minecraft Java 26.2
Nothing in the biome spawn lists and nothing in the rolls on death names the creaking, so the numbers on this page come from one place only: the game's own entry for it in Minecraft Java 26.2sets 1 health, 3 attack damage, 0.4 movement speed and 32 blocks follow range.
| Weapon | Attack damage | Full swings |
|---|---|---|
| 4 | 1 | |
| 5 | 1 | |
| 6 | 1 | |
| 7 | 1 | |
| 8 | 1 | |
| 9 | 1 | |
| 10 | 1 |
Turned around, 7 unblocked creaking hits empty a player's 20 health, 15% of the bar at a time, which is what the creaking's 3 damage on Normal buys it. On Easy the same creaking hit is 10%, on Hard 20%, so 10 hits against 5.
Behavior & Combat
Freezes the moment you look at it and moves only while you look away, and hitting it does nothing: the damage lands on the creaking heart that produced it. Break that heart and the creaking falls apart.
Its 1 health is 80th of 80, well under the 3 of the rabbit, and no mob sits closer.
On the offensive it deals 2 on Easy, 3 on Normal and 4 on Hard, and you will need to chew through 1 health (0.5 hearts) to bring one down.
To deal with one efficiently, exploit its weaknesses: it is vulnerable to Its own creaking heart and Daylight.
The practical takeaway is to respect its strengths, exploit the weaknesses listed above, and you will rarely lose a fight you choose to take.
Creaking commands
| Command | What it does |
|---|---|
| /summon minecraft:creaking | Puts a creaking on the block you are standing on. |
| /give @p minecraft:creaking_spawn_egg | Hands you the creaking spawn egg, so you can place creakings where you want them. |
| /kill @e[type=minecraft:creaking] | Removes every creaking that is loaded around you. |
Entity id minecraft:creaking, spawn egg minecraft:creaking_spawn_egg.
Creaking farm
There is no platform that produces creakings. Comes out of a creaking heart in the pale garden at night, and there is one at a time per heart. Anything you build has to feed that source instead of a dark floor.
Creaking version history
The creaking was added in Minecraft 1.21.4, which came out on 3 December 2024, so the creaking has been in the game for 1 years.
No other mob on this site arrived in 1.21.4, so the creaking is the only page here that carries that version. 80 of our 88 mobs are older than the creaking, 7 are younger.
The creaking numbers here come from Java 26.2, the version running now, and not from the one that introduced it.
What Creaking sounds like
Turn subtitles on and every creaking sound names itself in the corner of the screen. These are the 10 lines a creaking can put there, and you can play any of them yourself with /playsound minecraft:entity.creaking.ambient master @p.
