Overview

The Mule is a passive mob in Minecraft, which means it will never attack a player and simply goes about its own behaviour.

Unlike most creatures, the Mule does not spawn naturally in the world. Does not spawn naturally. Bred from a horse and a donkey.

Its defining trait is simple: combines horse and donkey traits.

It carries 15 to 30 health points, 7.5 to 15 hearts, rolled fresh when it spawns, and yields 1 to 3 experience when it dies.

It was first added in 1.6.1 and has been a fixture of Minecraft ever since.

A useful detail many players miss: Must be created by breeding a horse with a donkey.

For many players the appeal of the Mule is companionship: once tamed it becomes a loyal helper rather than just scenery.

Spawning

Does not spawn naturally. Bred from a horse and a donkey.

That makes the Mule a mob you create rather than discover, so planning ahead is part of obtaining one.

Breeding is not on the table for the Mule, so the only lever you have on how many there are is the process that creates them.

Drops

Here is what you can expect to collect from a Mule:

Nothing here is guaranteed: a kill can give you 0 to 2 Leather.

You also collect 1 to 3 experience for every Mule you defeat.

Leather is the reason to seek them out, and since they do not breed, each one has to be found rather than raised.

With nothing guaranteed, output is swingy: over many kills the averages hold, but any single Mule may give you little, so farm in volume rather than expecting a jackpot each time.

As a harmless mob, the Mule is best gathered opportunistically while you explore, and there is no danger in collecting from it, so it rarely justifies a dedicated trip.

Mule: 1 item per kill over 1 drop row

64 mule kills fill a stack of 64 Leather, because the ranges Minecraft Java 26.2 rolls for it come out at 1 per kill before Looting.

On health, attack and what a kill yields a mule reads exactly like the horse and donkey. 0 spawn entries against 5 spawn entries for the horse and 6 spawn entries for the donkey is the split, how often the biome files name them, counted over the spawn lists.

Behavior & Combat

Behaviourally, combines horse and donkey traits. Can carry a chest (15 slots) and be saddled, but cannot wear horse armor.

It notices a target from 32 blocks, 10th of 88 for follow range, with the zombified piglin its nearest at 35.

It is completely harmless and deals no damage, so the only risk it poses is wandering into lava, cacti or a long fall.

This is one of the tameable mobs. Repeatedly mount the mule until hearts appear.

Once prepared it can be ridden, which makes it as much a means of transport as a creature to study.

Bottom line: tame one and the Mule stops being an obstacle and becomes an asset you will want to protect.

Mule commands

Cheats have to be on in that world before the mule appears. It needs 1.396 by 1.6 blocks of space to stand in.
CommandWhat it does
/summon minecraft:mulePuts a mule on the block you are standing on.
/give @p minecraft:mule_spawn_eggHands you the mule spawn egg, so you can place mules where you want them.
/kill @e[type=minecraft:mule]Removes every mule that is loaded around you.

Entity id minecraft:mule, spawn egg minecraft:mule_spawn_egg.

Mule farm

There is no platform that produces mules. Does not spawn naturally. Bred from a horse and a donkey. Anything you build has to feed that source instead of a dark floor.

Each kill is worth 1 to 3 experience and up to 2 leather, or 5 with Looting III, and that figure is what decides how big the mule farm has to be.

1 to 3 experience per killLeather up to 2, 5 with Looting III

Mule version history

The mule was added in Minecraft 1.6.1, which came out on 28 June 2013, so the mule has been in the game for 13 years.

4 other mobs here came with it: the horse, the donkey, the skeleton horse and the zombie horse. That puts the mule behind 29 of the 88 mobs here and ahead of 54.

Every mule figure on this page is read from Minecraft Java 26.2 as it stands today, not from the version above.
