In Minecraft, the Axolotl is classified as a passive mob: it will not hunt a player down, though its attack damage is not zero, because it uses that on other mobs or in self-defence.
Look for the Axolotl across the Overworld; it is tied to Lush Caves.
Its defining trait is simple: attacks Drowned, Guardians, Elder Guardians, Squid, and Glow Squid.
Stat-wise it sits at 14 health (7 hearts), dropping 1 to 3 experience on death.
It was first added in 1.17 and has been a fixture of Minecraft ever since.
Even without combat or loot to speak of, the Axolotl adds character to the worlds it lives in and often plays a quiet supporting role in the wider ecosystem.
Damage by Difficulty
Spawning
Axolotls spawn in Lush Caves.
That single-biome restriction means Lush Caves is the only place to look; if you are not there, you will not find one, so locating the biome is the real task.

Naturally spawned axolotls will despawn over time when no player is nearby; naming one with a name tag or leading it away on a lead keeps it permanent.
With no attack to worry about, the Axolotl is something you gather or farm rather than fight.

Lush Caves is where it stands strongest: weight 10 on the axolotl list and 100% of it, arriving 4 to 6 at a time. That is the whole list.

Drops
Do not expect loot from the Axolotl: it has an empty drop table and yields only XP.
The value of the Axolotl is in what it does while alive, its behaviour and the role it plays in the world, rather than anything you collect by killing it, so there is little reason to hunt one for materials.
If you are after specific items, the Axolotl is not your source for them; look to mobs with populated drop tables or to mining and trading instead.
You also collect 1 to 3 experience for every Axolotl you defeat.
Since there is nothing to pick up, you do not need to worry about a hopper or collection system for axolotls; they leave the ground exactly as they found it.
Because the Axolotl is harmless and breeds, the efficient long-term approach is a small enclosed pen where a breeding pair keeps replacing what you harvest, rather than hunting wild ones down one by one.
The game rolls nothing for it when it dies, so it leaves nothing behind at all.

Coming the other way, an axolotl hit is 10% of a player's 20 health, 10 of them a full bar, all out of the axolotl's 2 damage on Normal.
Behavior & Combat
Attacks Drowned, Guardians, Elder Guardians, Squid, and Glow Squid. Plays dead when hurt to regenerate health. Grants Regeneration to players who help them fight.
At 1 it is 3rd of 72 for speed, just below the zombie nautilus at 1.1.
Its 14 health (7 hearts) comes with 2 damage on every difficulty on paper, not because it hunts you, but because that is what its attack is worth when it does use it.
To breed them, hand Bucket of Tropical Fish to a pair of adults; they enter love mode and a baby Axolotl appears, maturing in roughly twenty minutes.
It is a water-dwelling creature and will suffocate if it ends up on dry land, so keeping it in water is essential if you want to transport or keep one.
All told, the Axolotl is a low-risk part of the world that rewards patience more than aggression.

Axolotl farm
A axolotl farm copies the rule the game already uses for axolotl spawns. Spawns in water in Lush Caves biome, in total darkness on clay blocks.
Lush Caves is where the axolotl has the biggest slice of the roll, 100% across the 1 list the axolotl appears on, and that is the biome to build a axolotl farm in.
4 to 6 axolotls arrive per roll, so give the axolotl platform width instead of stacking it.
Breeding beats waiting on spawns here: bucket of tropical fish given to two adults produces a baby, and the pen keeps working in a lit, walled space where nothing new would ever spawn.

8 June 2021 is the day the axolotl arrived, in Minecraft 1.17, and the axolotl has been part of the game for 5 years since.
