Zombie
hostileOurs, not the game's own: how a zombie behaves. Bedrock v1.26.40.05 differs: spawn weight 95 on most Java biome lists (it runs from 19 to 100) against 55 on Bedrock; groups of 4 on Java against 2 on Bedrock. Checked 2026-08-22, and here is how we check.
Overview
In Minecraft, the Zombie is classified as a hostile mob: it will attack players on sight whenever it is able to reach them.
Zombies make their home in the Overworld, turning up in all Overworld biomes.
Its defining trait is simple: pursues and attacks players and villagers.
Stat-wise it sits at 20 health (10 hearts), dropping 5 experience on death.
Players have been encountering the Zombie since the Classic 0.24_SURVIVAL_TEST update.
A useful detail many players miss: Can pick up and equip items.
Knowing how the Zombie behaves is mostly about survival: recognising it early and reacting correctly is what keeps a night-time excursion from ending in a respawn.
Damage by Difficulty
Spawning
Zombies spawn in all Overworld biomes.
Because it appears across 53 different biomes, it is one of the easier mobs to track down, and heading to any of them should turn one up before long.
Spawns at light level 0 on solid blocks in the Overworld.
The light-level requirement is the key detail: it needs light level 0 to appear, so adjusting block light is the simplest way to control where it shows up.
Left alone far from any player, wild zombies eventually despawn, so use a name tag if you want a specific one to stick around.
If you want to farm zombies, build the spawning platform inside one of these biomes and keep the surrounding area dark.

Old Growth Pine Taiga is where it stands strongest: weight 100 on the monster list and 18.5% of it, arriving 2 to 4 at a time. There it shares the list with Creeper at 100, Skeleton at 100, Slime at 100, Spider at 100 and Zombie Villager at 25 and 2 more, 540 weight together, of which 100 is zombie. The other 52 biomes on its list run from 18.4% down to 3.7%.
Drops
Here is what you can expect to collect from a Zombie:
Nothing here is guaranteed: a kill can give you 0 to 2 Rotten Flesh, 1 Red Mushroom only in specific situations, 1 Iron Ingot (rarely, 2.5% chance), 1 Carrot (rarely, 2.5% chance), 1 Potato (rarely, 2.5% chance), and 1 Music Disc Lava Chicken only in specific situations.
In terms of experience, each kill is worth 5 XP orbs.
These are well worth keeping. Zombie Villagers have a 5% spawn rate among zombies and can be cured with a Weakness potion and Golden Apple.
The Looting enchantment on your sword raises the quantity and, for many of these items, the drop chance of the rarer rolls, so it is well worth using when you grind this mob.
With nothing guaranteed, output is swingy: over many kills the averages hold, but any single Zombie may give you little, so farm in volume rather than expecting a jackpot each time.
| Item | Count | Chance | Conditions |
|---|---|---|---|
| Rotten Flesh | 0 to 2 | not every kill | Looting III up to 5 |
| Red Mushroom | 0 to 1 | situational | Looting III up to 4 |
| Iron Ingot | 1 | 2.5% | player kill |
| Carrot | 1 | 2.5% | player kill |
| Potato | 1 | 2.5% | player kill, cooked when burnt |
| Music Disc Lava Chicken | 1 | situational | player kill |
The same Carrot comes off the husk drops 1 and the zombie villager the same.

Zombie: 14.34% of its category, rank 7 of 52
On 53 of the 66 biome lists (53 spawn entries in total), and 14.34% of every spawn the game puts in its monster group is a zombie.
A zombie averages 1 Rotten Flesh a kill on the rolls Minecraft Java 26.2 makes for it, before Looting, which puts a full stack of 64 Rotten Flesh at 64 kills. Carrot runs at 0.025 a kill, 2560 zombie kills for a stack of its own. 2 further rows sit under those, down to 0.025 Potato per zombie and 2560 kills a stack. 3 of those 4 rows (Carrot, Iron Ingot, and Potato) only roll when a player lands the killing blow, so a zombie killed by a fall or another mob averages 1 item instead of 1.075.

The 2 armour points on a zombie are already in that column: they cut a 4 damage swing to 3.68, worth 1 extra swing at the cheap end, and 3 rather than 2 at the expensive one. On the receiving end a zombie takes 15% off a player's 20 health per hit, so 7 of them land the kill; that share is the zombie's 3 damage on Normal. On Easy the same zombie hit is 10%, on Hard 20%, so 10 hits against 5. Those same figures also describe the husk and zombie villager. Where a zombie parts company is the number of rows the game rolls for them: 6 rows here, 5 rows for the husk and 4 rows for the zombie villager, counted over those rows themselves.
Behavior & Combat
Pursues and attacks players and villagers. Burns in sunlight. Can break wooden doors on Hard difficulty. Baby zombies are faster and do not burn.
It is one of the few mobs that wears armour: 2 points, which takes about 8% off every hit it receives.
On the offensive it deals 2 on Easy, 3 on Normal and 4 on Hard, and you will need to chew through 20 health (10 hearts) to bring one down.
When fighting back, remember it is weak to Sunlight, Fire, Smite enchantment, and Healing splash potions.
A sword enchanted with Smite shortens the fight considerably against this mob.
The Healing splash potions in its own weakness list are no slip of the pen: being undead, it is damaged by Healing and repaired by a Potion of Harming, and the 2 armour points it wears do nothing about either one.
As an undead mob it catches fire in direct daylight, so during the day it will either burn up or scramble for shade and water, one reason these are mostly a night-time and cave threat.
The practical takeaway is to respect its strengths, exploit the weaknesses listed above, and you will rarely lose a fight you choose to take.
Zombie commands
| Command | What it does |
|---|---|
| /summon minecraft:zombie | Puts a zombie on the block you are standing on. |
| /give @p minecraft:zombie_spawn_egg | Hands you the zombie spawn egg, so you can place zombies where you want them. |
| /kill @e[type=minecraft:zombie] | Removes every zombie that is loaded around you. |
Entity id minecraft:zombie, spawn egg minecraft:zombie_spawn_egg.
Zombie farm
A zombie farm copies the rule the game already uses for zombie spawns. Spawns at light level 0 on solid blocks in the Overworld.
The zombie is heaviest in Old Growth Pine Taiga at 18.5%, out of the 53 biome spawn lists it stands on, so a zombie farm belongs there rather than in the first cave you find.
Each roll brings 2 to 4 zombies at once, which is why a zombie farm wants floor area rather than height.
Each kill is worth 5 experience and up to 2 rotten flesh, or 5 with Looting III, and that figure is what decides how big the zombie farm has to be.
Old Growth Pine Taiga at 18.5%Zombie version history
The zombie goes back to Classic 0.24_SURVIVAL_TEST, from before the game had numbered releases, which makes the zombie one of the 8 oldest mobs on this site.
4 other mobs here came with it: the cow, the pig, the skeleton and the creeper. That puts the zombie behind 0 of the 88 mobs here and ahead of 80.
Every zombie figure on this page is read from Minecraft Java 26.2 as it stands today, not from the version above.
