Wolf
neutralTameableBreedableOurs, not the game's own: how a wolf behaves. Same on Bedrock v1.26.40.05 for weight, group, health. Checked 2026-08-22, and here is how we check.
Overview
The Wolf is a neutral mob in Minecraft, which means it ignores players until it is provoked, and only then turns aggressive.
You will normally come across wolfs in the Overworld, where they appear in Forest, Taiga, Old Growth Taiga, Snowy Taiga, and 1 other biome type.
What sets it apart is its behaviour: wild wolves are neutral, attacking only when hit.
It carries 8 health points, 4 hearts, and yields 1 to 3 experience when it dies.
Players have been encountering the Wolf since the Beta 1.4 update.
One thing worth knowing: Wolf Armor was added in 1.20.5.
For many players the appeal of the Wolf is companionship: once tamed it becomes a loyal helper rather than just scenery.
Damage by Difficulty
Spawning
In the wild, the Wolf is generated in Forest, Taiga, Old Growth Taiga, Snowy Taiga, and Grove.
Because it appears across 9 different biomes, it is one of the easier mobs to track down, and heading to any of them should turn one up before long.
Spawns on grass blocks in forest and taiga biomes, in packs of 4.
Spawns commonly come in batches of 4, which is worth remembering when you are deciding whether to engage or retreat.
Left alone far from any player, wild wolfs eventually despawn, so use a name tag if you want a specific one to stick around.
Since it only turns hostile when provoked, you can usually walk among wolfs safely as long as you avoid hitting one.
Where the Wolf spawns
Sparse Jungle is where it stands strongest: weight 8 on the creature list and 13.8% of it, arriving 1 to 8 at a time. There it shares the list with Chicken at 20, Sheep at 12, Pig at 10 and Cow at 8, 58 weight together, of which 8 is wolf. The other 8 biomes on its list run from 13.3% down to 4.2%.
| Biome | Weight | Share | Group |
|---|---|---|---|
Sparse Jungle | 8 | 13.8% | 2 to 4 |
Old Growth Pine Taiga | 8 | 13.3% | 4 |
Old Growth Spruce Taiga | 8 | 13.3% | 4 |
Snowy Taiga | 8 | 13.3% | 4 |
Taiga | 8 | 13.3% | 4 |
Savanna Plateau | 8 | 11.8% | 4 to 8 |
Forest | 5 | 11.1% | 4 |
Grove | 1 | 7.7% | 1 |
Wooded Badlands | 2 | 4.2% | 4 to 8 |
Drops
The Wolf leaves behind nothing collectable on death; you gain experience but no loot.
Because there is nothing to harvest from its corpse, the reason to engage a Wolf is almost always the experience or simply clearing it out of the way, not farming a resource.
If you are after specific items, the Wolf is not your source for them; look to mobs with populated drop tables or to mining and trading instead.
In terms of experience, each kill is worth 1 to 3 XP orbs.
Since there is nothing to pick up, you do not need to worry about a hopper or collection system for wolfs; they leave the ground exactly as they found it.
The game rolls nothing for it when it dies, so it leaves nothing behind at all.

Wolf: 1.54% of its category, rank 24 of 52
On 9 of the 66 biome lists (9 spawn entries in total), and 1.54% of every spawn the game puts in its creature group is a wolf.

Coming the other way, a wolf hit is 20% of a player's 20 health, 5 of them a full bar, all out of the wolf's 4 damage on Normal. On Easy the same wolf hit is 15%, on Hard 30%, so 7 hits against 4.
Behavior & Combat
Wild wolves are neutral, attacking only when hit. Tamed wolves follow and protect their owner. Attack skeletons on sight.
Its 8 health is 66th of 80, just under the 10 of the cow.
Its combat profile is 8 health (4 hearts) with attacks dealing 3 on Easy, 4 on Normal and 6 on Hard.
When fighting back, remember it is weak to Fire and Fall damage.
You can tame the Wolf: feed bones to a wild wolf. Each bone has a 1/3 chance to tame. Collar appears when tamed.
Wolfs can be bred with Any Meat; feed it to two adults and they produce a baby that grows up over about twenty minutes.
Bottom line: tame one and the Wolf stops being an obstacle and becomes an asset you will want to protect.

Wolf farm
Everything about a wolf farm follows the wolf spawn rule. Spawns on grass blocks in forest and taiga biomes, in packs of 4.
Sparse Jungle is where the wolf has the biggest slice of the roll, 13.8% across the 9 lists the wolf appears on, and that is the biome to build a wolf farm in.
Each roll brings 1 to 8 wolves at once, which is why a wolf farm wants floor area rather than height.
Breeding beats waiting on spawns here: any meat given to two adults produces a baby, and the pen keeps working in a lit, walled space where nothing new would ever spawn.
Sparse Jungle at 13.8%Wolf version history
Minecraft Beta 1.4 brought the wolf in on 30 March 2011, 15 years of wolf by now.
No other mob on this site arrived in Beta 1.4, so the wolf is the only page here that carries that version. 13 of our 88 mobs are older than the wolf, 74 are younger.
The wolf numbers here come from Java 26.2, the version running now, and not from the one that introduced it.
Wolf variants (9)
A wolf takes its coat from the biome it spawned in, so the pack you meet in a snowy taiga looks nothing like the one in a jungle.
| Variant | Where it comes from |
|---|---|
| Ashen | Snowy Taiga |
| Black | Old Growth Pine Taiga |
| Chestnut | Old Growth Spruce Taiga |
| Rusty | Bamboo Jungle Jungle Sparse Jungle |
| Snowy | Grove |
| Spotted | Savanna Savanna Plateau Windswept Savanna |
| Striped | Badlands Eroded Badlands Wooded Badlands |
| Woods | Forest |
| Pale | Any wolf the game spawns without a rule of its own can be this one. |
