Rabbit
passiveBreedableOurs, not the game's own: how a rabbit behaves. Same on Bedrock v1.26.40.05 for weight, group, health. Checked 2026-08-22, and here is how we check.
Overview
In Minecraft, the Rabbit is classified as a passive mob: it will not hunt a player down, though its attack damage is not zero, because it uses that on other mobs or in self-defence.
You will normally come across rabbits in the Overworld, where they appear in Desert, Flower Forest, Taiga, Snowy Taiga, and 3 other biome types.
In practice you will recognise it quickly, because hops around, avoids players and predators.
Stat-wise it sits at 3 health (1.5 hearts), dropping 1 to 3 experience on death.
The Rabbit has been part of the game since version 1.8.
A useful detail many players miss: The Killer Bunny variant is hostile but unavailable in survival.
Because it breeds and drops useful materials, the Rabbit is a staple of self-sufficient survival bases, supplying raw rabbit on demand.
Spawning
Natural spawns for the Rabbit occur in Desert, Flower Forest, Taiga, Snowy Taiga, Snowy Plains, Meadow, and Cherry Grove.
Because it appears across 12 different biomes, it is one of the easier mobs to track down, and heading to any of them should turn one up before long.
Spawns on grass or sand blocks with light level 9+, in groups of 2-3.
The light-level requirement is the key detail: it needs light level 9+ to appear, so adjusting block light is the simplest way to control where it shows up.
Spawns commonly come in batches of 2-3, which is worth remembering when you are deciding whether to engage or retreat.
Left alone far from any player, wild rabbits eventually despawn, so use a name tag if you want a specific one to stick around.
Because it is harmless, the Rabbit is mostly useful as a renewable source of its drops, and you can let a small population breed up over time.
Where the Rabbit spawns
Desert is where it stands strongest: weight 12 on the creature list and 92.3% of it, arriving 2 to 6 at a time. There it shares the list with Camel at 1, 13 weight together, of which 12 is rabbit. The other 11 biomes on its list run from 90.9% down to 6.7%.
| Biome | Weight | Share | Group |
|---|---|---|---|
Desert | 12 | 92.3% | 2 to 3 |
Ice Spikes | 10 | 90.9% | 2 to 3 |

Drops
The Rabbit drop table breaks down like this:
Every kill yields 1 Raw Rabbit.
On top of that, you may come away with 1 Rabbit Hide and 1 Rabbit's Foot (occasionally, 10% chance).
In terms of experience, each kill is worth 1 to 3 XP orbs.
Raw Rabbit from rabbits is renewable, so a small breeding setup keeps you supplied indefinitely.
Across many kills the guaranteed items pile up steadily while the chance-based extras trickle in, so consistent farming is the way to build a meaningful stockpile.
Because the Rabbit is harmless and breeds, the efficient long-term approach is a small enclosed pen where a breeding pair keeps replacing what you harvest, rather than hunting wild ones down one by one.
| Item | Count | Chance | Conditions |
|---|---|---|---|
| Rabbit Hide | 0 to 1 | not every kill | Looting III up to 4 |
| Raw Rabbit | 1 | always | Looting III up to 4, cooked when burnt |
| Rabbit's Foot | 1 | 10% | player kill |
It is not the only source of Rabbit's Foot: the husk drops 0 to 1.

Where the Rabbit lands, it has company: the salmon on the same 3 health.
Rabbit: 7.51% of its category, rank 14 of 52
On 12 of the 66 biome lists (12 spawn entries in total), and 7.51% of every spawn the game puts in its creature group is a rabbit.
A rabbit averages 1 Raw Rabbit a kill on the rolls Minecraft Java 26.2 makes for it, before Looting, which puts a full stack of 64 Raw Rabbit at 64 kills. Rabbit Hide runs at 0.5 a kill, 128 rabbit kills for a stack of its own. 1 further row sit under those, down to 0.1 Rabbit's Foot per rabbit and 640 kills a stack. 1 of those 3 rows (Rabbit's Foot) only roll when a player lands the killing blow, so a rabbit killed by a fall or another mob averages 1.5 items instead of 1.6.

On the receiving end a rabbit takes 15% off a player's 20 health per hit, so 7 of them land the kill; that share is the rabbit's attack damage attribute of 3.
Behavior & Combat
Hops around, avoids players and predators. Different skin variants depending on biome. Eats carrot crops.
Its 3 health is 75th of 80, just under the 4 of the chicken.
On the stat sheet it carries an attack damage attribute of 3 alongside 3 health (1.5 hearts), though it is not a mob that comes looking for a fight.
Rabbits can be bred with Carrot; feed it to two adults and they produce a baby that grows up over about twenty minutes.
All told, the Rabbit is a low-risk part of the world that rewards patience more than aggression.
Rabbit commands
| Command | What it does |
|---|---|
| /summon minecraft:rabbit | Puts a rabbit on the block you are standing on. |
| /give @p minecraft:rabbit_spawn_egg | Hands you the rabbit spawn egg, so you can place rabbits where you want them. |
| /kill @e[type=minecraft:rabbit] | Removes every rabbit that is loaded around you. |
Entity id minecraft:rabbit, spawn egg minecraft:rabbit_spawn_egg.
Rabbit farm
Build a rabbit farm around the one rule the game applies to every rabbit. Spawns on grass or sand blocks with light level 9+, in groups of 2-3.
The rabbit is heaviest in Desert at 92.3%, out of the 12 biome spawn lists it stands on, so a rabbit farm belongs there rather than in the first cave you find.
Each roll brings 2 to 6 rabbits at once, which is why a rabbit farm wants floor area rather than height.
Breeding beats waiting on spawns here: carrot given to two adults produces a baby, and the pen keeps working in a lit, walled space where nothing new would ever spawn.
Each kill is worth 1 to 3 experience and up to 1 rabbit hide, or 4 with Looting III, which is the number to scale the rabbit farm against.
Rabbit version history
2 September 2014 is the day the rabbit arrived, in Minecraft 1.8, and the rabbit has been part of the game for 11 years since.
3 other mobs here came with it: the guardian, the elder guardian and the endermite. 34 of our 88 mobs are older than the rabbit, 50 are younger.
All of the rabbit data above is taken from Java 26.2, so it describes the rabbit as it is today.
What Rabbit sounds like
