Parrot
passiveTameableOurs, not the game's own: how a parrot behaves. Same on Bedrock v1.26.40.05 for weight, group, health. Checked 2026-08-22, and here is how we check.
Overview
In Minecraft, the Parrot is classified as a passive mob: it will not hunt a player down, though its attack damage is not zero, because it uses that on other mobs or in self-defence.
Look for the Parrot across the Overworld; it is tied to Jungle, Bamboo Jungle, and Sparse Jungle.
In practice you will recognise it quickly, because flies around, perches on shoulders.
With 6 HP (3 hearts) on its bar, killing one rewards 1 to 3 experience.
It was first added in 1.12 and has been a fixture of Minecraft ever since.
Also worth noting: Feeding a cookie kills the parrot instantly.
For many players the appeal of the Parrot is companionship: once tamed it becomes a loyal helper rather than just scenery.
Spawning
Natural spawns for the Parrot occur in Jungle, Bamboo Jungle, and Sparse Jungle.
Your best bet is to head straight for Jungle, since that is where it turns up most reliably out of the handful of biomes it favours.
Spawns on logs, leaves, or grass in Jungle biomes. Rare.
Left alone far from any player, wild parrots eventually despawn, so use a name tag if you want a specific one to stick around.
With no attack to worry about, the Parrot is something you gather rather than fight, and since it does not breed, every one you want has to come from a fresh spawn.
Where the Parrot spawns
Jungle is where it stands strongest: weight 40 on the creature list and 44% of it, arriving 1 to 2 at a time. There it shares the list with Chicken at 20, Sheep at 12, Pig at 10, Cow at 8 and Panda at 1, 91 weight together, of which 40 is parrot. It also turns up in Bamboo Jungle at 23.5%.
| Biome | Weight | Share | Group |
|---|---|---|---|
Jungle | 40 | 44% | 1 to 2 |
Bamboo Jungle | 40 | 23.5% | 1 to 2 |
Drops
Here is what you can expect to collect from a Parrot:
Every kill yields 1 to 2 Feathers.
In terms of experience, each kill is worth 1 to 3 XP orbs.
Feather is the reason to seek them out, and since they do not breed, each one has to be found rather than raised.
Since every item here is guaranteed, the only variable is quantity, which makes this mob a dependable, low-variance source of what it carries.
As a harmless mob, the Parrot is best gathered opportunistically while you explore, and there is no danger in collecting from it, so it rarely justifies a dedicated trip.
| Item | Count | Chance | Conditions |
|---|---|---|---|
| Feather | 1 to 2 | always | Looting III up to 5 |
That Feather row is not its own: the chicken drops 0 to 2.
Parrot attributes
| Attribute | Value |

The Parrot shares this stretch of the scale: the bat on the same 6 health.
Parrot: 1.02% of its category, rank 31 of 52
On 2 of the 66 biome lists (2 spawn entries in total), and 1.02% of every spawn the game puts in its creature group is a parrot.
The ranges Minecraft Java 26.2 rolls for a parrot give 1.5 Feather per kill, so 64 Feather costs 43 kills before Looting.
| Item | Average per kill |
|---|---|
| 1.5 |
How this average is worked out
| Weapon | Attack damage | Full swings | Swings per 64 Feather |
|---|---|---|---|
| 4 | 2 | 86 | |
| 5 | 2 | 86 | |
| 6 | 1 | 43 | |
| 7 | 1 | 43 | |
| 8 | 1 | 43 | |
| 9 | 1 | 43 | |
| 10 | 1 | 43 |
On the receiving end a parrot takes 15% off a player's 20 health per hit, so 7 of them land the kill; that share is the parrot's attack damage attribute of 3.
Behavior & Combat
In the field, flies around, perches on shoulders. Mimics sounds of nearby hostile mobs. Dances when near a playing jukebox.
Its 6 health is 70th of 80, just under the 8 of the sheep.
On the stat sheet it carries an attack damage attribute of 3 alongside 6 health (3 hearts), though it is not a mob that comes looking for a fight.
You can tame the Parrot: feed seeds (wheat, melon, pumpkin, or beetroot seeds). 1/3 chance per seed to tame.
The Parrot cannot be bred, so the only way to get more is to find them spawning naturally in their home biomes.
Bottom line: tame one and the Parrot stops being an obstacle and becomes an asset you will want to protect.
Parrot commands
| Command | What it does |
|---|---|
| /summon minecraft:parrot | Puts a parrot on the block you are standing on. |
| /give @p minecraft:parrot_spawn_egg | Hands you the parrot spawn egg, so you can place parrots where you want them. |
| /kill @e[type=minecraft:parrot] | Removes every parrot that is loaded around you. |
Entity id minecraft:parrot, spawn egg minecraft:parrot_spawn_egg.
Parrot farm
Build a parrot farm around the one rule the game applies to every parrot. Spawns on logs, leaves, or grass in Jungle biomes. Rare.
The parrot is heaviest in Jungle at 44%, out of the 2 biome spawn lists it stands on, so a parrot farm belongs there rather than in the first cave you find.
1 to 2 parrots arrive per roll, so give the parrot platform width instead of stacking it.
Each kill is worth 1 to 3 experience and up to 2 feathers, or 5 with Looting III, which is the number to scale the parrot farm against.
Parrot version history
The parrot was added in Minecraft 1.12, which came out on 2 June 2017, so the parrot has been in the game for 9 years.
No other mob on this site arrived in 1.12, so the parrot is the only page here that carries that version. That puts the parrot behind 46 of the 88 mobs here and ahead of 41.
All of the parrot data above is taken from Java 26.2, so it describes the parrot as it is today.
What Parrot sounds like
Turn subtitles on and every parrot sound names itself in the corner of the screen. These are the 45 lines a parrot can put there, and you can play any of them yourself with /playsound minecraft:entity.parrot.ambient master @p.
