Overview

A Bat is a passive mob: it will never attack a player and simply goes about its own behaviour.

Bats make their home in the Overworld, turning up in Caves (all biomes).

In practice you will recognise it quickly, because flies around erratically.

With 6 HP (3 hearts) on its bar, killing one rewards no experience.

It was first added in 1.4.2 and has been a fixture of Minecraft ever since.

A useful detail many players miss: Purely ambient mob.

Even without combat or loot to speak of, the Bat adds character to the worlds it lives in and often plays a quiet supporting role in the wider ecosystem.

Spawning

Bats spawn in Caves (all biomes).

Almost every biome is on that list, 54 of them, so the biome is not what limits the Bat; the condition below is.

Spawns in caves at light level 3 or less, below Y=63. More common in October.

Pay attention to lighting: a light level of 3 or less is required, which is exactly what makes torch placement such an effective way to suppress or encourage these spawns.

Height matters too: these spawns are tied to around Y=63, so the vertical slice you build or explore at directly affects how many you encounter.

The Bat does not breed, so a steady supply means going back to where they spawn instead of penning a pair up at home.

Where the Bat spawns

Badlands, Bamboo Jungle, Beach and Birch Forest are where it stands strongest: weight 10 on the ambient list and 100% of it, arriving 8 at a time. That is the whole list.

Drops

The Bat drops neither items nor experience, which is unusual: it exists purely as an ambient or utility creature rather than a resource.

The value of the Bat is in what it does while alive, its behaviour and the role it plays in the world, rather than anything you collect by killing it, so there is little reason to hunt one for materials.

If you are after specific items, the Bat is not your source for them; look to mobs with populated drop tables or to mining and trading instead.

Since there is nothing to pick up, you do not need to worry about a hopper or collection system for bats; they leave the ground exactly as they found it.

As a harmless mob, the Bat is best gathered opportunistically while you explore, and there is no danger in collecting from it, so it rarely justifies a dedicated trip.

The game rolls nothing for it when it dies, so it leaves nothing behind at all.

The Bat does not stand alone on these numbers: the parrot on the same 6 health and the tadpole at that same figure.

Bat: 81.82% of its category, rank 1 of 52

On 54 of the 66 biome lists (54 spawn entries in total), and 81.82% of every spawn the game puts in its ambient group is a bat.

On health, attack and what a kill yields a bat reads exactly like the tadpole. 0 against 1 to 3 for the tadpole is the split, the experience they drop, both counted in the entity code.

Behavior & Combat

In the field, flies around erratically. Hangs upside down on solid blocks when idle. Completely harmless.

Its 6 health is 70th of 80, just under the 8 of the sheep.

It is completely harmless and deals no damage, so the only risk it poses is wandering into lava, cacti or a long fall.

The Bat cannot be bred, so the only way to get more is to find them spawning naturally in their home biomes.

All told, the Bat is a low-risk part of the world that rewards patience more than aggression.

All damage sources is on the weakness list of the allay as well.

Bat commands

Cheats have to be on in that world before the bat appears. It needs 0.5 by 0.9 blocks of space to stand in.
CommandWhat it does
/summon minecraft:batPuts a bat on the block you are standing on.
/give @p minecraft:bat_spawn_eggHands you the bat spawn egg, so you can place bats where you want them.
/kill @e[type=minecraft:bat]Removes every bat that is loaded around you.

Entity id minecraft:bat, spawn egg minecraft:bat_spawn_egg.

Bat farm

A bat farm copies the rule the game already uses for bat spawns. Spawns in caves at light level 3 or less, below Y=63. More common in October.

The bat is heaviest in Badlands at 100%, out of the 54 biome spawn lists it stands on, so a bat farm belongs there rather than in the first cave you find.

The game puts 8 bats down per roll, so a wide bat floor beats a tall one.

Bat version history

Minecraft 1.4.2 brought the bat in on 24 November 2012, 13 years of bat by now.

4 other mobs here came with it: the witch, the wither skeleton, the wither and the zombie villager. 24 of our 88 mobs are older than the bat, 59 are younger.

All of the bat data above is taken from Java 26.2, so it describes the bat as it is today.
