Frog
passiveBreedableOurs, not the game's own: how a frog behaves. Same on Bedrock v1.26.40.05 for weight, group, health. Checked 2026-08-22, and here is how we check.
Overview
In Minecraft, the Frog is classified as a passive mob: it will not hunt a player down, though its attack damage is not zero, because it uses that on other mobs or in self-defence.
Look for the Frog across the Overworld; it is tied to Swamp and Mangrove Swamp.
Its defining trait is simple: jumps high, eats small Slimes and Magma Cubes (producing Froglights from Magma Cubes).
It carries 10 health points, 5 hearts, and yields 1 to 3 experience when it dies.
Players have been encountering the Frog since the 1.19 update.
One thing worth knowing: Each variant produces a different Froglight color.
Even without combat or loot to speak of, the Frog adds character to the worlds it lives in and often plays a quiet supporting role in the wider ecosystem.
Spawning
Frogs spawn in Swamp and Mangrove Swamp.
Your best bet is to head straight for Mangrove Swamp, since that is where it turns up most reliably out of the handful of biomes it favours.
Spawns on grass blocks in swamp biomes.
Left alone far from any player, wild frogs eventually despawn, so use a name tag if you want a specific one to stick around.
Because it is harmless, the Frog is mostly useful as a renewable source of its drops, and you can let a small population breed up over time.
Another mob's spawn rule points back at it: the tadpole, which hatches from Frogspawn placed by frogs after breeding.
Where the Frog spawns
Mangrove Swamp is where it stands strongest: weight 10 on the creature list and 100% of it, arriving 2 to 5 at a time. It also turns up in Swamp at 20%.
| Biome | Weight | Share | Group |
|---|---|---|---|
Mangrove Swamp | 10 | 100% | 2 to 5 |
Swamp | 10 | 20% | 2 to 5 |
Drops
The Frog leaves behind nothing collectable on death; you gain experience but no loot.
The value of the Frog is in what it does while alive, its behaviour and the role it plays in the world, rather than anything you collect by killing it, so there is little reason to hunt one for materials.
If you are after specific items, the Frog is not your source for them; look to mobs with populated drop tables or to mining and trading instead.
In terms of experience, each kill is worth 1 to 3 XP orbs.
Since there is nothing to pick up, you do not need to worry about a hopper or collection system for frogs; they leave the ground exactly as they found it.
Because the Frog is harmless and breeds, the efficient long-term approach is a small enclosed pen where a breeding pair keeps replacing what you harvest, rather than hunting wild ones down one by one.
The game rolls nothing for it when it dies, so it leaves nothing behind at all.

Frog: 1.82% of its category, rank 23 of 52
On 2 of the 66 biome lists (2 spawn entries in total), and 1.82% of every spawn the game puts in its creature group is a frog.

Coming the other way, a frog hit is 50% of a player's 20 health, 2 of them a full bar, all out of the frog's attack damage attribute of 10.
Behavior & Combat
Jumps high, eats small Slimes and Magma Cubes (producing Froglights from Magma Cubes). Tongue attack with short range.
At 1 it is 3rd of 72 for speed, just below the zombie nautilus at 1.1.
On the stat sheet it carries an attack damage attribute of 10 alongside 10 health (5 hearts), though it is not a mob that comes looking for a fight.
Frogs can be bred with Slimeball; feed it to two adults and they produce a baby that grows up over about twenty minutes.
All told, the Frog is a low-risk part of the world that rewards patience more than aggression.
Frog commands
| Command | What it does |
|---|---|
| /summon minecraft:frog | Puts a frog on the block you are standing on. |
| /give @p minecraft:frog_spawn_egg | Hands you the frog spawn egg, so you can place frogs where you want them. |
| /kill @e[type=minecraft:frog] | Removes every frog that is loaded around you. |
Entity id minecraft:frog, spawn egg minecraft:frog_spawn_egg.
Frog farm
A frog farm copies the rule the game already uses for frog spawns. Spawns on grass blocks in swamp biomes.
Mangrove Swamp is where the frog has the biggest slice of the roll, 100% across the 2 lists the frog appears on, and that is the biome to build a frog farm in.
The game puts 2 to 5 frogs down per roll, so a wide frog floor beats a tall one.
Breeding beats waiting on spawns here: slimeball given to two adults produces a baby, and the pen keeps working in a lit, walled space where nothing new would ever spawn.
Mangrove Swamp at 100%Frog version history
Minecraft 1.19 brought the frog in on 7 June 2022, 4 years of frog by now.
3 other mobs here came with it: the tadpole, the allay and the warden. 71 of our 88 mobs are older than the frog, 13 are younger.
Every frog figure on this page is read from Minecraft Java 26.2 as it stands today, not from the version above.
