Overview

The Ghast is a hostile mob in Minecraft, which means it will attack players on sight whenever it is able to reach them.

What sets it apart is its behaviour: large flying mob that shoots explosive fireballs from long range.

Stat-wise it sits at 10 health (5 hearts), dropping 5 experience on death.

It was first added in Alpha v1.2.0 and has been a fixture of Minecraft ever since.

A useful detail many players miss: Despite their size (4x4x4), they only have 10 HP.

Knowing how the Ghast behaves is mostly about survival: recognising it early and reacting correctly is what keeps a night-time excursion from ending in a respawn.

Spawning

In the wild, the Ghast is generated in Nether Wastes, Soul Sand Valley, and Basalt Deltas.

Your best bet is to head straight for Soul Sand Valley, since that is where it turns up most reliably out of the handful of biomes it favours.

Spawns in open areas of the Nether with at least 4x4x4 blocks of space.

Being a Nether mob, it ignores the Overworld's darkness rules and can spawn regardless of light level within its home biomes, which makes the Nether dangerous even in well-lit areas.

It needs 4x4x4 blocks of clear air before it can spawn at all, and the open stretches that offer that sit in the Nether: Nether Wastes, Soul Sand Valley, and Basalt Deltas.

A Ghast farm is built around its own spawn rule rather than around the light level, so start from what makes them appear at all.

Where the Ghast spawns

Soul Sand Valley is where it stands strongest: weight 50 on the monster list and 70.4% of it, arriving 1 to 4 at a time. There it shares the list with Skeleton at 20 and Enderman at 1, 71 weight together, of which 50 is ghast. It also turns up in Nether Wastes at 29.8% and Basalt Deltas at 28.6%.

Drops

Here is what you can expect to collect from a Ghast:

Nothing here is guaranteed: a kill can give you 1 Ghast Tear, 0 to 2 Gunpowder, and 1 Music Disc Tears only in specific situations.

You also collect 5 experience for every Ghast you defeat.

These are well worth keeping. Ghast Tears are used in brewing Potions of Regeneration and crafting End Crystals.

The Looting enchantment on your sword raises the quantity and, for many of these items, the drop chance of the rarer rolls, so it is well worth using when you grind this mob.

With nothing guaranteed, output is swingy: over many kills the averages hold, but any single Ghast may give you little, so farm in volume rather than expecting a jackpot each time.

It is not the only source of Gunpowder: the creeper drops 0 to 2 and the witch the same.

Where the Ghast lands, it has company: the enderman at 64 follow range, the nearest we list to its 100.

Ghast: 1.95% of its category, rank 22 of 52

On 3 of the 66 biome lists (3 spawn entries in total), and 1.95% of every spawn the game puts in its monster group is a ghast.

The ranges Minecraft Java 26.2 rolls for a ghast give 1 Gunpowder per kill, so 64 Gunpowder costs 64 kills before Looting. Ghast Tear runs at 0.5 a kill, 128 ghast kills for a stack of its own.

On the receiving end a ghast takes 30% off a player's 20 health per hit, so 4 of them land the kill; that share is the ghast's 6 damage on Normal. On Easy the same ghast hit is 20%, on Hard 45%, so 5 hits against 3.

Behavior & Combat

Large flying mob that shoots explosive fireballs from long range. Fireballs can be deflected back by attacking them.

It notices a target from 100 blocks, the highest of any mob in the game for follow range, with the enderman its nearest at 64.

It can hit you for 4 on Easy, 6 on Normal and 9 on Hard, while its own 10 health (5 hearts) determines how many blows it takes to kill.

The fastest way to win is to lean on what it fears: Deflected fireballs (one-shot kill) and Arrows.

Since it can attack from range, closing the distance quickly or breaking line of sight with cover is often safer than trading hits at a distance.

The practical takeaway is to respect its strengths, exploit the weaknesses listed above, and you will rarely lose a fight you choose to take.

Ghast commands

Cheats have to be on in that world before the ghast appears. It needs 4 by 4 blocks of space to stand in.
CommandWhat it does
/summon minecraft:ghastPuts a ghast on the block you are standing on.
/give @p minecraft:ghast_spawn_eggHands you the ghast spawn egg, so you can place ghasts where you want them.
/kill @e[type=minecraft:ghast]Removes every ghast that is loaded around you.

Entity id minecraft:ghast, spawn egg minecraft:ghast_spawn_egg.

Ghast farm

Everything about a ghast farm follows the ghast spawn rule. Spawns in open areas of the Nether with at least 4x4x4 blocks of space.

Of the 3 biome spawn lists the ghast stands on, Soul Sand Valley gives the ghast its largest share at 70.4%, so a ghast platform there fills faster than the same build anywhere else.

1 to 4 ghasts arrive per roll, so give the ghast platform width instead of stacking it.

Each kill is worth 5 experience and up to 2 gunpowder, or 5 with Looting III, and that figure is what decides how big the ghast farm has to be.

Ghast version history

29 October 2010 is the day the ghast arrived, in Minecraft Alpha v1.2.0, and the ghast has been part of the game for 15 years since.

One other mob here came with it: the zombified piglin. That puts the ghast behind 10 of the 88 mobs here and ahead of 76.

Every ghast figure on this page is read from Minecraft Java 26.2 as it stands today, not from the version above.
