Creeper
hostileOurs, not the game's own: how a creeper behaves. Bedrock v1.26.40.05 differs: spawn weight 100 on most Java biome lists (it runs from 50 to 100) against 50 on Bedrock; groups of 4 on Java against 2 on Bedrock. Checked 2026-08-22, and here is how we check.
Overview
A Creeper is a hostile mob: it will attack players on sight whenever it is able to reach them.
Creepers make their home in the Overworld, turning up in all Overworld biomes.
What sets it apart is its behaviour: silently approaches players and detonates after a 1.5s fuse.
It carries 20 health points, 10 hearts, and yields 5 experience when it dies.
Players have been encountering the Creeper since the Classic 0.24_SURVIVAL_TEST update.
One thing worth knowing: Iconic Minecraft mob created from a modeling error.
Knowing how the Creeper behaves is mostly about survival: recognising it early and reacting correctly is what keeps a night-time excursion from ending in a respawn.
Damage by Difficulty
Spawning
Natural spawns for the Creeper occur in all Overworld biomes.
Because it appears across 53 different biomes, it is one of the easier mobs to track down, and heading to any of them should turn one up before long.
Spawns at light level 0 on solid blocks in the Overworld.
The light-level requirement is the key detail: it needs light level 0 to appear, so adjusting block light is the simplest way to control where it shows up.
Left alone far from any player, wild creepers eventually despawn, so use a name tag if you want a specific one to stick around.
If you want to farm creepers, build the spawning platform inside one of these biomes and keep the surrounding area dark.

Wooded BadlandsWhere the Creeper spawns
Badlands, Beach, Birch Forest and Cherry Grove are where it stands strongest: weight 100 on the monster list and 19.4% of it, arriving 2 to 4 at a time. There it shares the list with Skeleton at 100, Slime at 100, Spider at 100, Zombie at 95 and Enderman at 10 and 2 more, 515 weight together, of which 100 is creeper. The other 15 biomes on its list run from 19.3% down to 16.1%.
Drops
The Creeper drop table breaks down like this:
Nothing here is guaranteed: a kill can give you 0 to 2 Gunpowder and 1 Music Disc, but Music Discs drop only when killed by a skeleton or stray arrow.
In terms of experience, each kill is worth 5 XP orbs.
These are well worth keeping. Music Discs drop only when killed by a skeleton or stray arrow.
The Looting enchantment on your sword raises the quantity and, for many of these items, the drop chance of the rarer rolls, so it is well worth using when you grind this mob.
With nothing guaranteed, output is swingy: over many kills the averages hold, but any single Creeper may give you little, so farm in volume rather than expecting a jackpot each time.
| Item | Count | Chance | Conditions |
|---|---|---|---|
| Gunpowder | 0 to 2 | not every kill | Looting III up to 5 |
| Music Disc | 1 | situational | Music Discs drop only when killed by a skeleton or stray arrow |
That Gunpowder row is not its own: the witch drops 0 to 2 and the ghast the same.

The Creeper does not stand alone on these numbers: the skeleton, level with it on health, speed and follow range alike.
Creeper: 15.39% of its category, rank 3 of 52
On 53 of the 66 biome lists (53 spawn entries in total), and 15.39% of every spawn the game puts in its monster group is a creeper.
64 creeper kills fill a stack of 64 Gunpowder, because the ranges Minecraft Java 26.2 rolls for it come out at 1 per kill before Looting.

On the receiving end a creeper takes 215% off a player's 20 health per hit, so 1 of them land the kill; that share is the creeper's 43 damage on Normal. On Easy the same creeper hit is 110%, on Hard 320%, so 1 hits against 1.
Behavior & Combat
In the field, silently approaches players and detonates after a 1.5s fuse. Explosion destroys blocks. Charged creepers (struck by lightning) have double explosion power.
Its 20 health is 23rd of 80, just over the 16 of the spider.
On the offensive it deals 22 on Easy, 43 on Normal and 64 on Hard, and you will need to chew through 20 health (10 hearts) to bring one down.
To deal with one efficiently, exploit its weaknesses: it is vulnerable to Cats and ocelots (flees from them), Shields, and Knockback.
The practical takeaway is to respect its strengths, exploit the weaknesses listed above, and you will rarely lose a fight you choose to take.
Creeper commands
| Command | What it does |
|---|---|
| /summon minecraft:creeper | Puts a creeper on the block you are standing on. |
| /give @p minecraft:creeper_spawn_egg | Hands you the creeper spawn egg, so you can place creepers where you want them. |
| /kill @e[type=minecraft:creeper] | Removes every creeper that is loaded around you. |
Entity id minecraft:creeper, spawn egg minecraft:creeper_spawn_egg.
Creeper farm
Build a creeper farm around the one rule the game applies to every creeper. Spawns at light level 0 on solid blocks in the Overworld.
The creeper is heaviest in Badlands at 19.4%, out of the 53 biome spawn lists it stands on, so a creeper farm belongs there rather than in the first cave you find.
Each roll brings 2 to 4 creepers at once, which is why a creeper farm wants floor area rather than height.
Each kill is worth 5 experience and up to 2 gunpowder, or 5 with Looting III, so the size of the creeper farm follows the number you need of that one item.
Creeper version history
The creeper goes back to Classic 0.24_SURVIVAL_TEST, from before the game had numbered releases, which makes the creeper one of the 8 oldest mobs on this site.
4 other mobs here came with it: the cow, the pig, the zombie and the skeleton. 0 of our 88 mobs are older than the creeper, 80 are younger.
The creeper numbers here come from Java 26.2, the version running now, and not from the one that introduced it.
What Creeper sounds like
Turn subtitles on and every creeper sound names itself in the corner of the screen. These are the 3 lines a creeper can put there, and you can play any of them yourself with /playsound minecraft:entity.creeper.primed master @p.
