Enderman
neutralOurs, not the game's own: how an enderman behaves. Bedrock v1.26.40.05 differs: groups of 1 to 4 on Java against 1 to 2 on Bedrock. Checked 2026-08-22, and here is how we check.
Overview
An Enderman is a neutral mob: it is not hostile on sight, and its own behaviour decides when that changes: becomes hostile when looked at (crosshair on upper body) or attacked.
Endermans make their home in multiple dimensions, turning up in all Overworld biomes, The End, and Nether (Warped Forest, Soul Sand Valley).
What sets it apart is its behaviour: teleports randomly.
Stat-wise it sits at 40 health (20 hearts), dropping 5 experience on death.
It was first added in Beta 1.8 and has been a fixture of Minecraft ever since.
One thing worth knowing: Wearing a carved pumpkin prevents aggro from eye contact.
The Enderman sits in a useful middle ground, harmless if you respect it, but a real threat if you provoke it, which makes reading the situation important.
Damage by Difficulty
Spawning
In the wild, the Enderman is generated in all Overworld biomes, The End, and Nether (Warped Forest, Soul Sand Valley).
Because it appears across 61 different biomes, it is one of the easier mobs to track down, and heading to any of them should turn one up before long.
Spawns at light level 0 in the Overworld. Common in The End. Spawns at any light level in Warped Forest.
Being a Nether mob, it ignores the Overworld's darkness rules and can spawn regardless of light level within its home biomes, which makes the Nether dangerous even in well-lit areas.
Left alone far from any player, wild endermans eventually despawn, so use a name tag if you want a specific one to stick around.
Walking among endermans is safe only on their terms: becomes hostile when looked at (crosshair on upper body) or attacked.

Wooded BadlandsWhere the Enderman spawns
End Barrens, End Highlands, End Midlands and Small End Islands are where it stands strongest: weight 10 on the monster list and 100% of it, arriving 1 to 4 at a time. The other 56 biomes on its list run from 100% down to 0.6%.
Drops
The Enderman drop table breaks down like this:
Nothing here is guaranteed: a kill can give you 1 Ender Pearl.
In terms of experience, each kill is worth 5 XP orbs.
These are well worth keeping. Ender Pearls craft Eyes of Ender.
With nothing guaranteed, output is swingy: over many kills the averages hold, but any single Enderman may give you little, so farm in volume rather than expecting a jackpot each time.
| Item | Count | Chance | Conditions |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ender Pearl | 0 to 1 | not every kill | Looting III up to 4 |

The Enderman does not stand alone on these numbers: the ghast, whose 100 follow range has nothing we list nearer than this 64, the hoglin on the same 40 health and the zoglin at that same figure.
Enderman: 10.66% of its category, rank 8 of 52
On 61 of the 66 biome lists (61 spawn entries in total), and 10.66% of every spawn the game puts in its monster group is an enderman.
An enderman averages 0.5 Ender Pearl a kill on the rolls Minecraft Java 26.2 makes for it, before Looting, which puts a full stack of 64 Ender Pearl at 128 kills.
| Item | Average per kill |
|---|---|
| 0.5 |
How this average is worked out
| Weapon | Attack damage | Full swings | Swings per 64 Ender Pearl |
|---|---|---|---|
| 4 | 10 | 1280 | |
| 5 | 8 | 1024 | |
| 6 | 7 | 896 | |
| 7 | 6 | 768 | |
| 8 | 5 | 640 | |
| 9 | 5 | 640 | |
| 10 | 4 | 512 |
On the receiving end an enderman takes 35% off a player's 20 health per hit, so 3 of them land the kill; that share is the enderman's 7 damage on Normal. On Easy the same enderman hit is 20%, on Hard 55%, so 5 hits against 2.
Behavior & Combat
Teleports randomly. Becomes hostile when looked at (crosshair on upper body) or attacked. Picks up and moves blocks. Damaged by water and rain.
It notices a target from 64 blocks, 2nd of 88 for follow range, with the blaze its nearest at 48.
Its combat profile is 40 health (20 hearts) with attacks dealing 4 on Easy, 7 on Normal and 11 on Hard.
When fighting back, remember it is weak to Water, Rain, Fire (but teleports away), and Boats (traps them).
The Enderman cannot be bred, so the only way to get more is to find them spawning naturally in their home biomes.
As long as you avoid landing the first blow, you can usually go about your business near an Enderman without trouble.
Enderman commands
| Command | What it does |
|---|---|
| /summon minecraft:enderman | Puts an enderman on the block you are standing on. |
| /give @p minecraft:enderman_spawn_egg | Hands you the enderman spawn egg, so you can place endermen where you want them. |
| /kill @e[type=minecraft:enderman] | Removes every enderman that is loaded around you. |
Entity id minecraft:enderman, spawn egg minecraft:enderman_spawn_egg.
Enderman farm
Everything about a enderman farm follows the enderman spawn rule. Spawns at light level 0 in the Overworld. Common in The End. Spawns at any light level in Warped Forest.
The enderman is heaviest in End Barrens at 100%, out of the 61 biome spawn lists it stands on, so a enderman farm belongs there rather than in the first cave you find.
1 to 4 endermen arrive per roll, so give the enderman platform width instead of stacking it.
Each kill is worth 5 experience and up to 1 ender pearl, or 4 with Looting III, so the size of the enderman farm follows the number you need of that one item.
End Barrens at 100%Enderman version history
14 September 2011 is the day the enderman arrived, in Minecraft Beta 1.8, and the enderman has been part of the game for 14 years since.
2 other mobs here came with it: the cave spider and the silverfish. 14 of our 88 mobs are older than the enderman, 71 are younger.
Every enderman figure on this page is read from Minecraft Java 26.2 as it stands today, not from the version above.
What Enderman sounds like
Turn subtitles on and every enderman sound names itself in the corner of the screen. These are the 6 lines a enderman can put there, and you can play any of them yourself with /playsound minecraft:entity.enderman.ambient master @p.
