Overview
The Hoglin is a hostile mob in Minecraft, which means it will attack players on sight whenever it is able to reach them.
In practice you will recognise it quickly, because aggressive beast that flings players into the air.
It carries 40 health points, 20 hearts, and yields 5 experience when it dies.
Players have been encountering the Hoglin since the 1.16 update.
Also worth noting: Repelled by Warped Fungus.
Because it breeds and drops useful materials, the Hoglin is a staple of self-sufficient survival bases, supplying raw porkchop on demand.
Damage by Difficulty
Spawning
Hoglins spawn in Crimson Forest and Bastion Remnant.
The spawn table draws that line differently: it gives the Hoglin one biome, Crimson Forest, and has no entry at all for Bastion Remnant.
Spawns in Crimson Forest biomes in the Nether in groups of 3-4.
Being a Nether mob, it ignores the Overworld's darkness rules and can spawn regardless of light level within its home biomes, which makes the Nether dangerous even in well-lit areas.
They tend to arrive in clusters of 3-4 rather than alone, so expect to meet more than one at a time.
Both places it spawns, Crimson Forest and Bastion Remnant, lie in the Nether, so a portal comes before anything else.
A Hoglin farm is built around its own spawn rule rather than around the light level, so start from what makes them appear at all.
Its name turns up in the spawn rule of the zoglin, created when a Hoglin enters the Overworld or End.
Where the Hoglin spawns
Crimson Forest is where it stands strongest: weight 9 on the monster list and 60% of it, arriving 3 to 4 at a time. There it shares the list with Piglin at 5 and Zombified Piglin at 1, 15 weight together, of which 9 is hoglin. That is the whole list.
| Biome | Weight | Share | Group |
|---|---|---|---|
| Crimson Forest | 9 | 60% | 3 to 4 |
Drops
Here is what you can expect to collect from a Hoglin:
Every kill yields 2 to 4 Raw Porkchop.
On top of that, you may come away with 1 Leather.
You also collect 5 experience for every Hoglin you defeat.
Farming hoglins is the standard way to stockpile raw porkchop in quantity.
The Looting enchantment on your sword raises the quantity and, for many of these items, the drop chance of the rarer rolls, so it is well worth using when you grind this mob.
Across many kills the guaranteed items pile up steadily while the chance-based extras trickle in, so consistent farming is the way to build a meaningful stockpile.
| Item | Count | Chance | Conditions |
|---|---|---|---|
| Raw Porkchop | 2 to 4 | always | Looting, cooked when burnt |
| Leather | 0 to 1 | not every kill | Looting |
That Raw Porkchop row is not its own: the pig drops 1 to 3.

Coming the other way, a hoglin hit is 30% of a player's 20 health, 4 of them a full bar, all out of the hoglin's 6 damage on Normal. On Easy the same hoglin hit is 15%, on Hard 45%, so 7 hits against 3.
Behavior & Combat
Behaviourally, aggressive beast that flings players into the air. Fears Warped Fungus and Nether Portals. The only breedable hostile mob.
Hitting it barely moves it: 60% knockback resistance, where almost every other mob has none.
On the offensive it deals 3 on Easy, 6 on Normal and 9 on Hard, and you will need to chew through 40 health (20 hearts) to bring one down.
The fastest way to win is to lean on what it fears: Warped Fungus (repels them) and Nether Portals.
To breed them, hand Crimson Fungus to a pair of adults; they enter love mode and a baby Hoglin appears, maturing in roughly twenty minutes.
The practical takeaway is to respect its strengths, exploit the weaknesses listed above, and you will rarely lose a fight you choose to take.
