Overview

The Vindicator is a hostile mob in Minecraft, which means it will attack players on sight whenever it is able to reach them.

Vindicators make their home in the Overworld, turning up in Woodland Mansion and Villages (during raids).

What sets it apart is its behaviour: aggressive melee attacker wielding an iron axe.

With 24 HP (12 hearts) on its bar, killing one rewards 5 experience.

The Vindicator has been part of the game since version 1.11.

Knowing how the Vindicator behaves is mostly about survival: recognising it early and reacting correctly is what keeps a night-time excursion from ending in a respawn.

Spawning

Vindicators spawn in Woodland Mansion and Villages (during raids).

Spawns in Woodland Mansions and during raids (wave 2+).

Naturally spawned vindicators will despawn over time when no player is nearby; naming one with a name tag or leading it away on a lead keeps it permanent.

A Vindicator farm is built around its own spawn rule rather than around the light level, so start from what makes them appear at all.

Its name turns up in the spawn rule of the ravager, sometimes ridden by Pillagers, Vindicators, or Evokers.

Drops

Here is what you can expect to collect from a Vindicator:

Nothing here is guaranteed: a kill can give you 1 Emerald and 1 Iron Axe (occasionally, 8.5% chance).

You also collect 5 experience for every Vindicator you defeat.

Farming vindicators is the standard way to stockpile emeralds in quantity.

The Looting enchantment on your sword raises the quantity and, for many of these items, the drop chance of the rarer rolls, so it is well worth using when you grind this mob.

With nothing guaranteed, output is swingy: over many kills the averages hold, but any single Vindicator may give you little, so farm in volume rather than expecting a jackpot each time.

It is not the only source of Emerald: the evoker drops 0 to 1.

The Vindicator does not stand alone on these numbers: the pillager on the same 24 health.

Vindicator: 4 values out of Vindicator.createAttributes

Nothing in the biome lists and nothing in the loot tables names the vindicator, so the numbers on this page come from one place only: Vindicator.createAttributes in the Java 26.2 client jar sets 24 health, 5 attack damage, 0.35 movement speed and 12 blocks follow range.

The roll ranges in a vindicator's Java 26.2 loot table give 0.5 Emerald per kill, so 64 Emerald costs 128 kills before Looting. 1 of those 1 rows (Emerald) only roll when a player lands the killing blow, so a vindicator killed by a fall or another mob averages 0 items instead of 0.5.

Coming the other way, a vindicator hit is 65% of a player's 20 health, 2 of them a full bar, all out of the vindicator's 13 damage on Normal. On Easy the same vindicator hit is 35%, on Hard 95%, so 3 hits against 2.

Behavior & Combat

In the field, aggressive melee attacker wielding an iron axe. Very fast and deals high damage. Named 'Johnny' vindicators attack all mobs.

It notices a target from 12 blocks, 74th of 76 for follow range, with the cow its nearest at 16.

Its combat profile is 24 health (12 hearts) with attacks dealing 7 on Easy, 13 on Normal and 19 on Hard.

To deal with one efficiently, exploit its weaknesses: it is vulnerable to Ranged attacks (kiting) and Shields.

The practical takeaway is to respect its strengths, exploit the weaknesses listed above, and you will rarely lose a fight you choose to take.
