Overview

In Minecraft, the Zombie is classified as a hostile mob — it will attack players on sight whenever it is able to reach them.

Zombies make their home in the Overworld, turning up in All Overworld biomes.

Its defining trait is simple — pursues and attacks players and villagers.

Stat-wise it sits at 20 health (10 hearts), dropping 5 experience on death.

Players have been encountering the Zombie since the Classic 0.24_SURVIVAL_TEST update.

A useful detail many players miss — Can pick up and equip items.

Knowing how the Zombie behaves is mostly about survival: recognising it early and reacting correctly is what keeps a night-time excursion from ending in a respawn.

Spawning

Zombies spawn in All Overworld biomes.

That single-biome restriction means All Overworld biomes is the only place to look; if you are not there, you will not find one, so locating the biome is the real task.

Spawns at light level 0 on solid blocks in the Overworld.

The light-level requirement is the key detail: it needs light level 0 to appear, so adjusting block light is the simplest way to control where it shows up.

Left alone far from any player, wild zombies eventually despawn, so use a name tag if you want a specific one to stick around.

If you want to farm zombies, build the spawning platform inside one of these biomes and keep the surrounding area dark.

Drops

Here is what you can expect to collect from a Zombie:

Every kill yields 0–2 Rotten Flesh (always, 100% chance).

On top of that, rarer rolls can give 1 Iron Ingot (rarely, 2.5% chance), 1 Carrot (rarely, 2.5% chance), and 1 Potato (rarely, 2.5% chance).

In terms of experience, each kill is worth 5 XP orbs.

Farming zombies is the standard way to stockpile rotten flesh in quantity.

The Looting enchantment on your sword raises the quantity and, for many of these items, the drop chance of the rarer rolls, so it is well worth using when you grind this mob.

Across many kills the guaranteed items pile up steadily while the chance-based extras trickle in, so consistent farming is the way to build a meaningful stockpile.

Behavior & Combat

Pursues and attacks players and villagers. Burns in sunlight. Can break wooden doors on Hard difficulty. Baby zombies are faster and do not burn.

Its 20 health is modest, falling to roughly 3 hits from a diamond sword.

On the offensive it deals 2 on Easy, 3 on Normal and 4 on Hard, and you will need to chew through 20 health (10 hearts) to bring one down.

When fighting back, remember it is weak to Sunlight, Fire, Smite enchantment, and Healing splash potions.

A sword enchanted with Smite shortens the fight considerably against this mob.

Being undead, it is healed by the Wither effect and harmed by Instant Health, while Instant Damage (Harming) potions hurt it instead of helping — the opposite of how those potions affect you.

As an undead mob it catches fire in direct daylight, so during the day it will either burn up or scramble for shade and water — one reason these are mostly a night-time and cave threat.

The practical takeaway is to respect its strengths, exploit the weaknesses listed above, and you will rarely lose a fight you choose to take.
